Psalms 40

LEB

NIV

1 I waited patiently for Yahweh, And he inclined to me and heard my cry for help.
1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
2 And [so] he brought me up from [the] roaring pit, from the miry clay. And he put my feet upon a rock; he made my steps steady.
2 He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
3 Then he put a new song in my mouth, a praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and will trust Yahweh.
3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the LORDand put their trust in him.
4 Blessed [is] the man who makes Yahweh his trust and does not turn to [the] proud and [to those who] fall away [to] a lie.
4 Blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, who does not look to the proud, to those who turn aside to false gods.
5 Many things, O Yahweh my God, you have done-- your wonderful deeds and your thoughts toward us. There is none to compare with you. If I [tried to] proclaim and tell [of them], they would be too numerous to count.
5 Many, LORD my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us. None can compare with you; were I to speak and tell of your deeds, they would be too many to declare.
6 A sacrifice and offering you do not desire. {My ears you have opened}. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not demanded.
6 Sacrifice and offering you did not desire— but my ears you have opened — burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require.
7 Then I said, "Look, I come. In [the] scroll of [the] book it is written concerning me:
7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come— it is written about me in the scroll.
8 'I delight to do your will, O my God, and your law [is] {deep within me}.'"
8 I desire to do your will, my God; your law is within my heart.”
9 I have brought good tidings [of] righteousness in the great congregation. Look, I have not shut my lips. O Yahweh, {you surely know that}.
9 I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly; I do not seal my lips, LORD, as you know.
10 Your righteousness I have not hidden in the midst of my heart. I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loyal love or your faithfulness from [the] great congregation.
10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart; I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help. I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness from the great assembly.
11 As for you, O Yahweh, do not withhold your mercies from me. Let your loyal love and your faithfulness continually preserve me.
11 Do not withhold your mercy from me, LORD; may your love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 For evils without number have encompassed me. My iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me.
12 For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.
13 Be pleased, O Yahweh, to deliver me. O Yahweh, hurry to help me.
13 Be pleased to save me, LORD; come quickly, LORD, to help me.
14 Let them be shamed and abashed altogether who seek to take away my life. Let them be repulsed and humiliated [who] desire my harm.
14 May all who want to take my life be put to shame and confusion; may all who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace.
15 Let them be appalled because of their shame, those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!"
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!” be appalled at their own shame.
16 Let them rejoice and be glad in you, all those who seek you. Let them say continually, "Yahweh is great!" --those who love your salvation.
16 But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who long for your saving help always say, “The LORD is great!”
17 But I [am] poor and needy. Let my Lord consider me. You [are] my help and my deliverer. O my God, do not delay.
17 But as for me, I am poor and needy; may the Lord think of me. You are my help and my deliverer; you are my God, do not delay.
