1 For the leader. With stringed instruments. On sh'minit [low-pitched musical instruments?]. A psalm of David: ADONAI, don't rebuke me in your anger, don't discipline me in the heat of your fury.

<To the chief music-maker on corded instruments, on the Sheminith. A Psalm. Of David.> O Lord, do not be bitter with me in your wrath; do not send punishment on me in the heat of your passion.
2 Be gracious to me, ADONAI, because I am withering away; heal me, ADONAI, because my bones are shaking;

Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am wasted away: make me well, for even my bones are troubled.
3 I am completely terrified; and you, ADONAI - how long?

My soul is in bitter trouble; and you, O Lord, how long?
4 Come back, ADONAI, and rescue me! Save me for the sake of your grace;

Come back, O Lord, make my soul free; O give me salvation because of your mercy.
5 for in death, no one remembers you; in Sh'ol, who will praise you?

For in death there is no memory of you; in the underworld who will give you praise?
6 I am worn out with groaning; all night I drench my bed with tears, flooding my couch till it swims.

The voice of my sorrow is a weariness to me; all the night I make my bed wet with weeping; it is watered by the drops flowing from my eyes.
7 My vision is darkened with anger; it grows weak because of all my foes.

My eyes are wasting away with trouble; they are becoming old because of all those who are against me.
8 Get away from me, all you workers of evil! For ADONAI has heard the sound of my weeping,

Go from me, all you workers of evil; for the Lord has given ear to the voice of my weeping.
9 ADONAI has heard my pleading, ADONAI will accept my prayer.

The Lord has given ear to my request; the Lord has let my prayer come before him.
10 All my enemies will be confounded, completely terrified; they will turn back and be suddenly put to shame.

Let all those who are against me be shamed and deeply troubled; let them be turned back and suddenly put to shame.
