The Message Bible MSG
1 By Shlomo: God, give the king your fairness in judgment, endow this son of kings with your righteousness,
1
Give the gift of wise rule to the king, O God, the gift of just rule to the crown prince.
2 so that he can govern your people rightly and your poor with justice.
2
May he judge your people rightly, be honorable to your meek and lowly.
3 May mountains and hills provide your people with peace through righteousness.
3
Let the mountains give exuberant witness; shape the hills with the contours of right living.
4 May he defend the oppressed among the people, save the needy and crush the oppressor.
4
Please stand up for the poor, help the children of the needy, come down hard on the cruel tyrants.
5 May they fear you as long as the sun endures and as long as the moon, through all generations.
5
Outlast the sun, outlive the moon - age after age after age.
6 May he be like rain falling on mown grass, like showers watering the land.
6
Be rainfall on cut grass, earth-refreshing rain showers.
7 In his days, let the righteous flourish and peace abound, till the moon is no more.
7
Let righteousness burst into blossom and peace abound until the moon fades to nothing.
8 May his empire stretch from sea to sea, from the [Euphrates] River to the ends of the earth.
8
Rule from sea to sea, from the River to the Rim.
9 May desert-dwellers bow before him; may his enemies lick the dust.
9
Foes will fall on their knees before God, his enemies lick the dust.
10 The kings of Tarshish and the coasts will pay him tribute; the kings of Sh'va and S'va will offer gifts.
10
Kings remote and legendary will pay homage, kings rich and resplendent will turn over their wealth.
11 Yes, all kings will prostrate themselves before him; all nations will serve him.
11
All kings will fall down and worship, and godless nations sign up to serve him,
12 For he will rescue the needy when they cry, the poor too and those with none to help them.
12
Because he rescues the poor at the first sign of need, the destitute who have run out of luck.
13 He will have pity on the poor and needy; and the lives of the needy he will save.
13
He opens a place in his heart for the down-and-out, he restores the wretched of the earth.
14 He will redeem them from oppression and violence; their blood will be precious in his view.
14
He frees them from tyranny and torture - when they bleed, he bleeds; when they die, he dies.
15 May [the king] live long! May they give him gold from the land of Sh'va! May they pray for him continually; yes, bless him all day long.
15
And live! Oh, let him live! Deck him out in Sheba gold. Offer prayers unceasing to him, bless him from morning to night.
16 May there be an abundance of grain in the land, all the way to the tops of the mountains. May its crops rustle like the L'vanon. May people blossom in the city like the grasses in the fields.
16
Fields of golden grain in the land, cresting the mountains in wild exuberance, Cornucopias of praise, praises springing from the city like grass from the earth.
17 May his name endure forever, his name, Yinnon, as long as the sun. May people bless themselves in him, may all nations call him happy.
17
May he never be forgotten, his fame shine on like sunshine. May all godless people enter his circle of blessing and bless the One who blessed them.
18 Blessed be ADONAI, God, the God of Isra'el, who alone works wonders.
18
Blessed God, Israel's God, the one and only wonder-working God!
19 Blessed be his glorious name forever, and may the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen. Amen.
19
Blessed always his blazing glory! All earth brims with his glory.
20 This completes the prayers of David the son of Yishai.
20
Yes and Yes and Yes.
