Ruth 4

NCV 1 Boaz went to the city gate and sat there until the close relative he had mentioned passed by. Boaz called to him, "Come here, friend, and sit down." So the man came over and sat down. NIV 1 Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian-redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said, “Come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down. NCV 2 Boaz gathered ten of the older leaders of the city and told them, "Sit down here!" So they sat down. NIV 2 Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, “Sit here,” and they did so. NCV 3 Then Boaz said to the close relative, "Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, wants to sell the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. NIV 3 Then he said to the guardian-redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelek. NCV 4 So I decided to tell you about it: If you want to buy back the land, then buy it in front of the people who are sitting here and in front of the older leaders of my people. But if you don't want to buy it, tell me, because you are the only one who can buy it, and I am next after you." The close relative answered, "I will buy back the land." NIV 4 I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, do so. But if you will not, tell me, so I will know. For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line.” “I will redeem it,” he said. NCV 5 Then Boaz explained, "When you buy the land from Naomi, you must also marry Ruth, the Moabite, the dead man's wife. That way, the land will stay in the dead man's name." NIV 5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land from Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the dead man’s widow, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property.” NCV 6 The close relative answered, "I can't buy back the land. If I did, I might harm what I can pass on to my own sons. I cannot buy the land back, so buy it yourself." NIV 6 At this, the guardian-redeemer said, “Then I cannot redeem it because I might endanger my own estate. You redeem it yourself. I cannot do it.” NCV 7 Long ago in Israel when people traded or bought back something, one person took off his sandal and gave it to the other person. This was the proof of ownership in Israel. NIV 7 (Now in earlier times in Israel, for the redemption and transfer of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel.) NCV 8 So the close relative said to Boaz, "Buy the land yourself," and he took off his sandal. NIV 8 So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal. NCV 9 Then Boaz said to the older leaders and to all the people, "You are witnesses today. I am buying from Naomi everything that belonged to Elimelech and Kilion and Mahlon. NIV 9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon. NCV 10 I am also taking Ruth, the Moabite who was the wife of Mahlon, as my wife. I am doing this so her dead husband's property will stay in his name and his name will not be separated from his family and his hometown. You are witnesses today." NIV 10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!” NCV 11 So all the people and older leaders who were at the city gate said, "We are witnesses. May the Lord make this woman, who is coming into your home, like Rachel and Leah, who had many children and built up the people of Israel. May you become powerful in the district of Ephrathah and famous in Bethlehem. NIV 11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem. NCV 12 As Tamar gave birth to Judah's son Perez, may the Lord give you many children through Ruth. May your family be great like his." NIV 12 Through the offspring the LORD gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” NCV 13 So Boaz took Ruth home as his wife and had sexual relations with her. The Lord let her become pregnant, and she gave birth to a son. NIV 13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. NCV 14 The women told Naomi, "Praise the Lord who gave you this grandson. May he become famous in Israel. NIV 14 The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the LORD, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! NCV 15 He will give you new life and will take care of you in your old age because of your daughter-in-law who loves you. She is better for you than seven sons, because she has given birth to your grandson." NIV 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.” NCV 16 Naomi took the boy, held him in her arms, and cared for him. NIV 16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. NCV 17 The neighbors gave the boy his name, saying, "This boy was born for Naomi." They named him Obed. Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. NIV 17 The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David. NCV 18 This is the family history of Perez, the father of Hezron. NIV 18 This, then, is the family line of Perez: Perez was the father of Hezron, NCV 19 Hezron was the father of Ram, who was the father of Amminadab. NIV 19 Hezron the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, NCV 20 Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, who was the father of Salmon. NIV 20 Amminadab the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, NCV 21 Salmon was the father of Boaz, who was the father of Obed. NIV 21 Salmon the father of Boaz, Boaz the father of Obed, NCV 22 Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. NIV 22 Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of David.
