1 O SIGNORE, perchè te ne stai lontano? Perchè ti nascondi a’ tempi che siamo in distretta?

2 L’empio colla sua superbia persegue il povero afflitto; Ma saranno presi nelle macchinazioni che hanno fatte.

3 Perciocchè l’empio si gloria de’ desiderii dell’anima sua; E benedice l’avaro, e dispetta il Signore.

4 L’empio, secondo l’alterezza del suo volto, non si cura di nulla; Tutti i suoi pensieri sono, che non vi è Dio.

5 Le sue vie son profane in ogni tempo; I tuoi giudicii gli sono una cosa troppo alta, per averli davanti a sè; Egli soffia contro a tutti i suoi nemici.

6 Egli dice nel suo cuore: Io non sarò giammai smosso; Egli dice, che in veruna età non caderà in alcun male.

7 La sua bocca è piena di esecrazione, e di frodi, e d’inganno; Sotto la lingua sua vi è perversità ed iniquità.

8 Egli sta negli agguati per le ville; Egli uccide l’innocente in luoghi nascosti; I suoi occhi spiano il povero.

9 Egli insidia il povero nel suo nascondimento, Come il leone nella sua spelonca; Egli l’insidia per predarlo; Egli preda il povero, traendolo nella sua rete.

10 Egli se ne sta quatto e chino; E molti poveri caggiono nelle sue unghie.

11 Egli dice nel cuor suo: Iddio l’ha dimenticato; Egli ha nascosta la sua faccia, egli giammai non lo vedrà.

12 Levati, Signore; o Dio, alza la tua mano; Non dimenticare i poveri afflitti.

13 Perchè l’empio dispetta egli Iddio? Perchè dice egli nel cuor suo, che tu non ne ridomanderai ragione?

14 Tu l’hai pur veduto; perciocchè tu riguardi l’oltraggio e il dispetto, Per prendere il fatto in mano. Il povero si rimette in te; Tu sei l’aiutatore dell’orfano.

15 Fiacca il braccio dell’empio; E poi, se tu ricerchi l’empietà del malvagio, non la troverai più.

16 Il Signore è re in sempiterno; Le genti son perite dalla sua terra.

17 O Signore, tu esaudisci il desiderio degli umili; Tu raffermi il cuor loro, le tue orecchie sono attente a loro;

18 Per far ragione all’orfano e al povero; Acciocchè l’uomo di terra non continui più ad usar violenza.

Good News Translation GNT

1 Why are you so far away, O Lord? Why do you hide yourself when we are in trouble?

2 The wicked are proud and persecute the poor; catch them in the traps they have made.

3 The wicked are proud of their evil desires; the greedy curse and reject the Lord.

4 The wicked do not care about the Lord; in their pride they think that God doesn't matter.

5 The wicked succeed in everything. They cannot understand God's judgments; they sneer at their enemies.

6 They say to themselves, "We will never fail; we will never be in trouble."

7 Their speech is filled with curses, lies, and threats; they are quick to speak hateful, evil words.

8 They hide themselves in the villages, waiting to murder innocent people. They spy on their helpless victims;

9 they wait in their hiding place like lions. They lie in wait for the poor; they catch them in their traps and drag them away.

10 The helpless victims lie crushed; brute strength has defeated them.

11 The wicked say to themselves, "God doesn't care! He has closed his eyes and will never see me!"

12 O Lord, punish those wicked people! Remember those who are suffering!

13 How can the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "He will not punish me"?

14 But you do see; you take notice of trouble and suffering and are always ready to help. The helpless commit themselves to you; you have always helped the needy.

15 Break the power of wicked and evil people; punish them for the wrong they have done until they do it no more.

16 The Lord is king forever and ever. Those who worship other gods will vanish from his land.

17 You will listen, O Lord, to the prayers of the lowly; you will give them courage.

18 You will hear the cries of the oppressed and the orphans; you will judge in their favor, so that mortal men may cause terror no more.
