1 CELEBRATE il Signore; perciocchè egli è buono. Perciocchè la sua benignità dura in eterno.

2 Così dicano quelli che sono stati riscattati dal Signore, I quali egli ha riscossi di distretta.

3 E li ha raccolti da’ diversi paesi, Dal Levante e dal Ponente; dal Settentrione e dal mare.

4 Essi andavano errando per deserti, per cammini di solitudine; Non trovavano città abitata.

5 Erano affamati ed assetati; L’anima loro spasimava in loro.

6 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha tratti fuor delle loro angosce;

7 E li ha condotti per diritto cammino, Per andare in città abitata.

8 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.

9 Perciocchè egli ha saziata l’anima assetata, Ed ha empiuta di beni l’anima affamata.

10 Così dicano quelli che dimoravano in tenebre ed in ombra di morte, Prigioni, ritenuti in afflizione, e ne’ ferri.

11 Perciocchè erano stati ribelli alle parole del Signore, Ed avevano sprezzato il consiglio dell’Altissimo;

12 Onde egli aveva abbattuto il cuor loro con affanni, Ed erano caduti; e non vi era alcuno che li soccorresse.

13 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha salvati dalle loro angosce;

14 E li ha tratti fuor delle tenebre, e dell’ombra della morte; Ed ha rotti i lor legami.

15 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.

16 Perciocchè egli ha rotte le porte di rame, Ed ha spezzate le sbarre di ferro.

17 Così dicano gli stolti, ch’erano afflitti per li lor misfatti, Ne’ quali camminavano, e per le loro iniquità.

18 La cui anima abbominava ogni cibo; Ed erano giunti fino alle porte della morte.

19 Ma, avendo gridato al Signore, mentre erano in distretta, Egli li ha salvati dalle loro angosce.

20 Egli ha mandata la sua parola, e li ha sanati, E liberati dalle lor malattie mortali.

21 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.

22 E sacrifichino sacrificii di lode, E raccontino le sue opere con giubilo.

23 Così dicano quelli che scendono nel mare sopra navi, Che fanno traffico su per le grandi acque.

24 Essi veggono le opere del Signore, E le sue maraviglie nel profondo mare.

25 Perciocchè, alla sua parola, egli fa levare il vento di tempesta, Il quale alza le onde di esso.

26 Salgono al cielo, poi scendono agli abissi; L’anima loro si strugge di male.

27 Saltano, e traballano come un ebbro; E perdono tutto il lor senno.

28 Ma, gridando al Signore, mentre sono in distretta, Egli li trae fuor delle loro angosce.

29 Egli acqueta la tempesta, E le onde loro si fermano.

30 Ed essi si rallegrano che sono acquetate; Ed egli li conduce al porto da loro desiderato.

31 Celebrino adunque appo il Signore la sua benignità, E le sue maraviglie appo i figliuoli degli uomini.

32 Ed esaltinlo nella raunanza del popolo, E laudinlo nel concistoro degli anziani.

33 Egli riduce i fiumi in deserto, E le vene delle acque in luoghi aridi;

34 La terra fertile in salsuggine, Per la malvagità de’ suoi abitanti.

35 Egli riduce i deserti in guazzi d’acque. E la terra arida in vene d’acque;

36 E fa quivi abitar gli affamati, I quali vi fondano città da abitare.

37 E seminano campi, e piantano vigne, Che producono rendita di frutto.

38 Ed egli li benedice, e moltiplicano grandemente; Ed egli non iscema i lor bestiami.

39 Poi vengono al meno, e sono abbassati Per distretta, per avversità, e per affanni.

40 Egli spande lo sprezzo sopra i nobili, E li fa andare errando per luoghi deserti, ove non vi è via alcuna.

41 E innalza il bisognoso dalla miseria, E fa che le famiglie moltiplicano a guisa di gregge.

42 Gli uomini diritti, veggendo queste cose, si rallegrano; Ma ogni iniquità si tura la bocca.

43 Chi è savio? osservi queste cose, E consideri le benignità del Signore.

Good News Translation GNT

1 "Give thanks to the Lord, because he is good; his love is eternal!"

2 Repeat these words in praise to the Lord, all you whom he has saved. He has rescued you from your enemies

3 and has brought you back from foreign countries, from east and west, from north and south.

4 Some wandered in the trackless desert and could not find their way to a city to live in.

5 They were hungry and thirsty and had given up all hope.

6 Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress.

7 He led them by a straight road to a city where they could live.

8 They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them.

9 He satisfies those who are thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

10 Some were living in gloom and darkness, prisoners suffering in chains,

11 because they had rebelled against the commands of Almighty God and had rejected his instructions.

12 They were worn out from hard work; they would fall down, and no one would help.

13 Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress.

14 He brought them out of their gloom and darkness and broke their chains in pieces.

15 They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them.

16 He breaks down doors of bronze and smashes iron bars.

17 Some were fools, suffering because of their sins and because of their evil;

18 they couldn't stand the sight of food and were close to death.

19 Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress.

20 He healed them with his command and saved them from the grave.

21 They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them.

22 They must thank him with sacrifices, and with songs of joy must tell all that he has done.

23 Some sailed over the ocean in ships, earning their living on the seas.

24 They saw what the Lord can do, his wonderful acts on the seas.

25 He commanded, and a mighty wind began to blow and stirred up the waves.

26 The ships were lifted high in the air and plunged down into the depths. In such danger the sailors lost their courage;

27 they stumbled and staggered like drunks - all their skill was useless.

28 Then in their trouble they called to the Lord, and he saved them from their distress.

29 He calmed the raging storm, and the waves became quiet.

30 They were glad because of the calm, and he brought them safe to the port they wanted.

31 They must thank the Lord for his constant love, for the wonderful things he did for them.

32 They must proclaim his greatness in the assembly of the people and praise him before the council of the leaders.

33 The Lord made rivers dry up completely and stopped springs from flowing.

34 He made rich soil become a salty wasteland because of the wickedness of those who lived there.

35 He changed deserts into pools of water and dry land into flowing springs.

36 He let hungry people settle there, and they built a city to live in.

37 They sowed the fields and planted grapevines and reaped an abundant harvest.

38 He blessed his people, and they had many children; he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing.

39 When God's people were defeated and humiliated by cruel oppression and suffering,

40 he showed contempt for their oppressors and made them wander in trackless deserts.

41 But he rescued the needy from their misery and made their families increase like flocks.

42 The righteous see this and are glad, but all the wicked are put to silence.

43 May those who are wise think about these things; may they consider the Lord's constant love.
