1 Cantico di Maalot. IO alzo gli occhi miei a te, Che abiti ne’ cieli.

I lift up my eyes to you, to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
2 Ecco, come i servi hanno gli occhi alla mano de’ lor padroni; Come la serva ha gli occhi alla mano della sua padrona, Così noi abbiamo gli occhi nostri al Signore Iddio nostro, Infino a tanto ch’egli abbia pietà di noi.

As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy.
3 Abbi pietà di noi, Signore, abbi pietà di noi; Perciocchè noi siamo molto sazii di disprezzo.

Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured no end of contempt.
4 L’anima nostra è grandemente sazia Dello scherno degli uomini agiati, dello sprezzo degli altieri.
