1 La parola del Signore, che fu indirizzata a Sofonia, figliuolo di Cusi, figliuolo di Ghedalia, figliuolo di Amaria, figliuolo di Ezechia, a’ dì di Giosia, figliuolo di Amon, re di Giuda.

2 IO farò del tutto perire ogni cosa d’in su la faccia della terra, dice il Signore.

3 Io farò perir gli uomini, e gli animali; io farò perir gli uccelli del cielo, e i pesci del mare; e gl’intoppi, insieme con gli empi; e sterminerò gli uomini d’in su la faccia della terra, dice il Signore.

4 E stenderò la mia mano sopra Giuda, e sopra tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme; e sterminerò di questo luogo il rimanente de’ Baali, il nome de’ Camari, insieme co’ sacerdoti.

5 E quelli parimente che adorano l’esercito del cielo sopra i tetti; e quelli ancora che adorano il Signore, e gli giurano; e quelli che giurano per Malcam;

6 e quelli che si ritraggono indietro dal Signore, e quelli che non cercano il Signore, e non lo richieggono.

7 Silenzio, per la presenza del Signore Iddio! conciossiachè il giorno del Signore sia vicino; perciocchè il Signore ha apparecchiato un sacrificio, egli ha ordinati i suoi convitati.

8 Ed avverrà, nel giorno del sacrificio del Signore, che io farò punizione de’ principi, e de’ figliuoli del re, e di tutti quelli che si vestono di vestimenti strani.

9 In quel giorno ancora farò punizione di tutti coloro che saltano sopra la soglia; che riempiono le case de’ lor signori di rapina, e di frode.

10 E in quel giorno, dice il Signore, vi sarà una voce di grido verso la porta de’ pesci, ed un urlo verso la seconda porta, ed un gran fracasso verso i colli.

11 Urlate, abitanti del Mortaio; perciocchè tutto il popolo de’ mercatanti è perito, tutti i portatori di danari sono sterminati.

12 Ed avverrà in quel tempo, che io investigherò Gerusalemme con delle lucerne, e farò punizione degli uomini che si sono rappresi sopra le lor fecce; che dicono nel cuor loro: Il Signore non fa nè bene nè male.

13 E le lor facoltà saranno in preda, e le lor case in desolazione; ed avranno edificate delle case, e non vi abiteranno; e piantate delle vigne, e non ne berranno il vino.

14 Il gran giorno del Signore è vicino; egli è vicino, e si affretta molto; la voce del giorno del Signore sarà di persone che grideranno amaramente.

15 I capitani sono già là. Quel giorno sarà giorno d’indegnazione; giorno di distretta, e d’angoscia; giorno di tumulto, e di fracasso; giorno di tenebre, e di caligine; giorno di nebbia, e di folta oscurità;

16 giorno di tromba, e di stormo, sopra le città forti, e sopra gli alti cantoni.

17 Ed io metterò gli uomini in distretta, e cammineranno come ciechi; perciocchè han peccato contro al Signore; e il lor sangue sarà sparso come polvere, e la lor carne come sterchi.

18 Nè il loro argento, nè il loro oro, non li potrà scampare nel giorno dell’indegnazione del Signore; e tutto il paese sarà consumato per lo fuoco della sua gelosia; perciocchè egli farà una finale, ed anche affrettata distruzione di tutti gli abitanti del paese.

1 This is the word that the LORD spoke to Zephaniah, who was the son of Cushi, the grandson of Gedaliah, and the great-grandson of Amariah, son of Hezekiah. The LORD spoke his word in the days of Judah's King Josiah, son of Amon.

2 "I will gather everything on the face of the earth and put an end to it," declares the LORD.

3 "I will put an end to humans and animals. I will put an end to the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and the sins that make people fall, together with the sinners. I will remove all people from the face of the earth," declares the LORD.

4 "I will use my power against Judah and against those who live in Jerusalem. I will remove the faithful few of Baal from this place and the names of the pagan priests along with my priests.

5 I will remove those who worship all the stars in the sky on their rooftops and those who worship by swearing loyalty to the LORD while also swearing loyalty to the god Milcom.

6 I will remove those who have turned away from following the LORD and those who no longer seek the LORD or ask him for help."

7 Be silent in the presence of the Almighty LORD, because the day of the LORD is near. The LORD has prepared a sacrifice. He has invited his special guests.

8 "On the day of the LORD's sacrifice I will punish the officials, the king's sons, and all who dress in foreign clothing.

9 On that day I will punish all who jump over the doorway and all who fill their master's house with violence and deception.

10 On that day a loud cry will come from Fish Gate, a howling from the Second Part of the city, and a loud crashing sound from the hills," declares the LORD.

11 "Howl, inhabitants of the Mortar, because all the merchants will be destroyed and all who handle money will be killed.

12 "At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are satisfied with their hardened lifestyle, who think that the LORD won't do anything--good or bad.

13 Their wealth will be looted. Their homes will be demolished. They will build houses, but they won't live in them. They will plant vineyards, but they won't drink their wine."

14 The frightening day of the LORD is near. It is near and coming very quickly. Listen! Warriors will cry out bitterly on the day of the LORD.

15 That day will be a day of overflowing fury, a day of trouble and distress, a day of devastation and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and overcast skies,

16 a day of rams' horns and battle cries against the fortified cities and against the high corner towers.

17 "I will bring such distress on humans that they will walk like they are blind, because they have sinned against the LORD." Their blood will be poured out like dust and their intestines like manure.

18 Their silver and their gold will not be able to rescue them on the day of the LORD's overflowing fury. The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery anger, because he will put an end, a frightening end, to those who live on earth.
