1 Worte Agurs, des Sohnes Jakes, der Ausspruch. Es spricht der Mann zu Ithiel, zu Ithiel und Ukal:

The words of Agur son of Jakeh. An oracle. Thus says the man: I am weary, O God, I am weary, O God. How can I prevail?
2 Fürwahr, ich bin unvernünftiger als irgend einer, und Menschenverstand habe ich nicht.

Surely I am too stupid to be human; I do not have human understanding.
3 Und Weisheit habe ich nicht gelernt, daß ich Erkenntnis des Heiligen besäße.

I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the holy ones.
4 Wer ist hinaufgestiegen gen Himmel und herniedergefahren? Wer hat den Wind in seine Fäuste gesammelt? Wer die Wasser in ein Tuch gebunden? Wer hat aufgerichtet alle Enden der Erde? Was ist sein Name, und was der Name seines Sohnes, wenn du es weißt?

Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of the hand? Who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is the person's name? And what is the name of the person's child? Surely you know!
5 Alle Rede Gottes ist geläutert; ein Schild ist er denen, die auf ihn trauen.

Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
6 Tue nichts zu seinen Worten hinzu, damit er dich nicht überführe und du als Lügner erfunden werdest.

Do not add to his words, or else he will rebuke you, and you will be found a liar.
7 Zweierlei erbitte ich von dir; verweigere es mit nicht, ehe ich sterbe:

Two things I ask of you; do not deny them to me before I die:
8 Eitles und Lügenwort entferne von mir, Armut und Reichtum gib mir nicht, speise mich mit dem mir beschiedenen Brote;

Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that I need,
9 damit ich nicht satt werde und dich verleugne und spreche: Wer ist Jehova? und damit ich nicht verarme und stehle, und mich vergreife an dem Namen meines Gottes.

or I shall be full, and deny you, and say, "Who is the Lord?" or I shall be poor, and steal, and profane the name of my God.
10 Verleumde einen Knecht nicht bei seinem Herrn, damit er dir nicht fluche, und du es büßen müssest.

Do not slander a servant to a master, or the servant will curse you, and you will be held guilty.
11 Ein Geschlecht, das seinem Vater flucht und seine Mutter nicht segnet;

There are those who curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.
12 ein Geschlecht, das rein ist in seinen Augen und doch nicht gewaschen von seinem Unflat;

There are those who are pure in their own eyes yet are not cleansed of their filthiness.
13 ein Geschlecht, wie stolz sind seine Augen, und seine Wimpern erheben sich! -

There are those—how lofty are their eyes, how high their eyelids lift!—
14 ein Geschlecht, dessen Zähne Schwerter sind, und Messer sein Gebiß, um wegzufressen die Elenden von der Erde und die Dürftigen aus der Menschen Mitte!

there are those whose teeth are swords, whose teeth are knives, to devour the poor from off the earth, the needy from among mortals.
15 Der Blutegel hat zwei Töchter: gib her! gib her! Drei sind es, die nicht satt werden, vier, die nicht sagen: Genug!

The leech has two daughters; "Give, give," they cry. Three things are never satisfied; four never say, "Enough":
16 Der Scheol und der verschlossene Mutterleib, die Erde, welche des Wassers nicht satt wird, und das Feuer, das nicht sagt: Genug!

Sheol, the barren womb, the earth ever thirsty for water, and the fire that never says, "Enough."
17 Ein Auge, das den Vater verspottet und den Gehorsam gegen die Mutter verachtet, das werden die Raben des Baches aushacken und die Jungen des Adlers fressen.

The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.
18 Drei sind es, die zu wunderbar für mich sind, und vier, die ich nicht erkenne:

Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand:
19 der Weg des Adlers am Himmel, der Weg einer Schlange auf dem Felsen, der Weg eines Schiffes im Herzen des Meeres, und der Weg eines Mannes mit einer Jungfrau. -

the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a girl.
20 Also ist der Weg eines ehebrecherischen Weibes: sie ißt, und wischt ihren Mund und spricht: Ich habe kein Unrecht begangen.

This is the way of an adulteress: she eats, and wipes her mouth, and says, "I have done no wrong."
21 Unter dreien erzittert die Erde, und unter vieren kann sie es nicht aushalten:

Under three things the earth trembles; under four it cannot bear up:
22 unter einem Knechte, wenn er König wird, und einem gemeinen Menschen, wenn er satt Brot hat;

a slave when he becomes king, and a fool when glutted with food;
23 unter einem unleidlichen Weibe, wenn sie zur Frau genommen wird, und einer Magd, wenn sie ihre Herrin beerbt.

an unloved woman when she gets a husband, and a maid when she succeeds her mistress.
24 Vier sind die Kleinen der Erde, und doch sind sie mit Weisheit wohl versehen:

Four things on earth are small, yet they are exceedingly wise:
25 die Ameisen, ein nicht starkes Volk, und doch bereiten sie im Sommer ihre Speise;

the ants are a people without strength, yet they provide their food in the summer;
26 die Klippendächse, ein nicht kräftiges Volk, und doch setzen sie ihr Haus auf den Felsen;

the badgers are a people without power, yet they make their homes in the rocks;
27 die Heuschrecken haben keinen König, und doch ziehen sie allesamt aus in geordneten Scharen;

the locusts have no king, yet all of them march in rank;
28 die Eidechse kannst du mit Händen fangen, und doch ist sie in den Palästen der Könige.

the lizard can be grasped in the hand, yet it is found in kings' palaces.
29 Drei haben einen stattlichen Schritt, und vier einen stattlichen Gang:

Three things are stately in their stride; four are stately in their gait:
30 der Löwe, der Held unter den Tieren, und der vor nichts zurückweicht;

the lion, which is mightiest among wild animals and does not turn back before any;
31 der Lendenstraffe, oder der Bock; und ein König, bei welchem der Heerbann ist.

the strutting rooster, the he-goat, and a king striding before his people.
32 Wenn du töricht gehandelt hast, indem du dich erhobst, oder wenn du Böses ersonnen: die Hand auf den Mund!

If you have been foolish, exalting yourself, or if you have been devising evil, put your hand on your mouth.
33 Denn das Pressen der Milch ergibt Butter, und das Pressen der Nase ergibt Blut, und das Pressen des Zornes ergibt Hader.

For as pressing milk produces curds, and pressing the nose produces blood, so pressing anger produces strife.
