37 (12-36) And they went up over against them by the stairs of the city of David, at the going up of the wall of the house of David, and to the water gate eastward:

Nehemiah 12:37

And at the fountain gate, which was over against them
Of which see ( Nehemiah 2:14 ) and which was to the south of the dung gate:

they went up;
that is, one of the two companies, that which took to the right on the wall, ( Nehemiah 12:31 ) with which these words are to be connected:

by the stairs of the city of David;
which went up to the city of Zion, built on an eminence:

at the going up of the wall, above the house of David;
where the wall was higher, and there was an ascent to it:

even unto the water gate eastward;
of which see ( Nehemiah 3:26 ) ( 8:16 ) turning from the south to the east, and so drew nigh the temple.

36 (12-35) And his brethren Semeia, and Azareel, Malalai, Galalai, Maai, Nathanael, and Judas, and Hanani, with the musical instruments of David the man of God: and Esdras the scribe before them at the fountain gate.

38 (12-37) And the second choir of them that gave thanks went on the opposite side, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the wall, and upon the tower of the furnaces, even to the broad wall,
39 (12-38) And above the gate of Ephraim, and above the old gate, and above the fish gate and the tower of Hananeel, and the tower of Emath, and even to the flock gate: and they stood still in the watch gate.
