Proverbi 24:23-34

23 Anche queste sono massime dei Savi. Non è bene, in giudizio, aver de’ riguardi personali.

24 Chi dice all’empio: "Tu sei giusto", i popoli lo malediranno, lo esecreranno le nazioni.

25 Ma quelli che sanno punire se ne troveranno bene, e su loro scenderanno benedizione e prosperità.

26 Dà un bacio sulle labbra chi dà una risposta giusta.

27 Metti in buon ordine gli affari tuoi di fuori, metti in assetto i tuoi campi, poi ti fabbricherai la casa.

28 Non testimoniare, senza motivo, contro il tuo prossimo; vorresti tu farti ingannatore con le tue parole?

29 Non dire: "Come ha fatto a me così farò a lui; renderò a costui secondo l’opera sua".

30 Passai presso il campo del pigro e presso la vigna dell’uomo privo di senno;

31 ed ecco le spine vi crescean da per tutto, i rovi ne coprivano il suolo, e il muro di cinta era in rovina.

32 Considerai la cosa, e mi posi a riflettere; e da quel che vidi trassi una lezione:

33 Dormire un po’, sonnecchiare un po’, incrociare un po’ le mani per riposare…

34 e la tua povertà verrà come un ladro, e la tua indigenza, come un uomo armato.

INTRODUCTION TO 1 KINGS 12

This chapter relates Rehoboam's going to Shechem to be made king, and Jeroboam's return from Egypt, 1Ki 12:1,2, the people's request to Rehoboam to be eased of their taxes, as the condition of making him king, 1Ki 12:3,4, his answer to them, after three days, having had the advice both of the old and young men, which latter he followed, and gave in a rough answer, 1Ki 12:5-15, upon which ten tribes revolted from him, and two abode by him, 1Ki 12:16-20, wherefore he meditated a war against the ten tribes, but was forbid by the Lord to engage in it, 1Ki 12:21-24 and Jeroboam, in order to establish his kingdom, and preserve the people from a revolt to the house of David, because of the temple worship at Jerusalem, devised a scheme of idolatrous worship in his own territories, 1Ki 12:25-33.
