1 Reyes 15

1 En el año dieciocho del rey Jeroboam hijo de Nabat, Abiam comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

2 Reinó tres años en Jerusalén. El nombre de su madre fue Maaca, hija de Abisalom.

3 Y anduvo en todos los pecados de su padre, que había hecho éste antes de él; y no fue su corazón perfecto con el SEÑOR su Dios, como el corazón de David su padre.

4 Mas por amor de David, le dio el SEÑOR su Dios lámpara en Jerusalén, despertándole a su hijo después de él, y confirmando a Jerusalén.

5 Por cuanto David había hecho lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, y de ninguna cosa que le mandase se había apartado en todos los días de su vida, excepto el negocio de Urías heteo.

6 Y hubo guerra entre Roboam y Jeroboam todos los días de su vida.

7 Los demás de los hechos de Abiam, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no están escritas en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? Y hubo guerra entre Abiam y Jeroboam.

8 Y durmió Abiam con sus padres, y lo sepultaron en la ciudad de David; y reinó Asa su hijo en su lugar.

9 En el año veinte de Jeroboam rey de Israel, Asa comenzó a reinar sobre Judá.

10 Y reinó cuarenta y un años en Jerusalén; el nombre de su madre fue Maaca, hija de Abisalom.

11 Y Asa hizo lo recto ante los ojos del SEÑOR, como David su padre.

12 Porque quitó los sodomitas de la tierra, y quitó todas las suciedades que sus padres habían hecho.

13 Y también privó a su madre Maaca de ser princesa, porque había hecho un ídolo en un bosque. Además deshizo Asa el ídolo de su madre, y lo quemó junto al arroyo de Cedrón.

14 Mas los altos no se quitaron; pero el corazón de Asa fue perfecto para con el SEÑOR toda su vida.

15 También metió en la Casa del SEÑOR lo que su padre había dedicado, y lo que él dedicó: oro, y plata, y vasos.

16 Y hubo guerra entre Asa y Baasa rey de Israel, todo el tiempo de ambos.

17 Y subió Baasa rey de Israel contra Judá, y edificó a Rama, para no dejar salir ni entrar a ninguno de Asa, rey de Judá.

18 Entonces tomando Asa toda la plata y oro que había quedado en los tesoros de la Casa del SEÑOR, y los tesoros de la casa real, los entregó en las manos de sus siervos, y los envió el rey Asa a Ben-adad, hijo de Tabrimón, hijo de Hezión, rey de Siria, el cual residía en Damasco, diciendo:

19 Alianza hay entre mí y ti, y entre mi padre y el tuyo; he aquí yo te envío un presente de plata y oro; ve, y rompe tu alianza con Baasa rey de Israel, para que me deje.

20 Y Ben-adad consintió con el rey Asa, y envió los príncipes de los ejércitos que tenía contra las ciudades de Israel, e hirió a Ijón, y a Dan, y a Abel-bet-maaca, y a toda Cineret, con toda la tierra de Neftalí.

21 Y oyendo esto Baasa, dejó de edificar a Ramá, y se estuvo en Tirsa.

22 Entonces el rey Asa convocó a todo Judá, sin exceptuar ninguno; y quitaron de Ramá la piedra y la madera con que Baasa edificaba, y edificó el rey Asa con ello a Geba de Benjamín, y a Mizpa.

23 Lo demás de todos los hechos de Asa, y toda su fortaleza, y todas las cosas que hizo, y las ciudades que edificó, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Judá? Con todo eso en el tiempo de su vejez enfermó de sus pies.

24 Y durmió Asa con sus padres, y fue sepultado con sus padres en la ciudad de David su padre; y reinó en su lugar Josafat su hijo.

25 Y Nadab, hijo de Jeroboam, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel en el segundo año de Asa rey de Judá; y reinó sobre Israel dos años.

26 E hizo lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR, andando en el camino de su padre, y en sus pecados con que hizo pecar a Israel.

27 Y Baasa hijo de Ahías, el cual era de la casa de Isacar, hizo conspiración contra él; y lo hirió Baasa en Gibetón, que era de los filisteos; porque Nadab y todo Israel tenían cercado a Gibetón.

28 Lo mató pues Baasa en el tercer año de Asa rey de Judá, y reinó en lugar suyo.

29 Y cuando él vino al reino, hirió toda la casa de Jeroboam, sin dejar alma viviente de los de Jeroboam, hasta raerlo, conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR que él habló por su siervo Ahías silonita;

30 por los pecados de Jeroboam que él había cometido, y con los cuales hizo pecar a Israel; y por su provocación con que provocó a enojo al SEÑOR Dios de Israel.

31 Lo demás de los hechos de Nadab, y todas las cosas que hizo, ¿no está todo escrito en el libro de las crónicas de los reyes de Israel?

32 Y hubo guerra entre Asa y Baasa rey de Israel, todo el tiempo de ambos.

33 En el tercer año de Asa rey de Judá, comenzó a reinar Baasa hijo de Ahías sobre todo Israel en Tirsa; y reinó veinticuatro años.

34 E hizo lo malo delante de los ojos del SEÑOR, y anduvo en el camino de Jeroboam, y en su pecado con que hizo pecar a Israel.

Chapter 15

Wicked reign of Abijam, king of Judah. (1-8) Good reign of Asa, king of Judah. (9-24) The evil reigns of Nadab and Baasha in Israel. (25-34)

Verses 1-8 Abijam's heart was not perfect with the Lord his God; he wanted sincerity; he began well, but he fell off, and walked in all the sins of his father, following his bad example, though he had seen the bad consequences of it. David's family was continued as a lamp in Jerusalem, to maintain the true worship of God there, when the light of Divine truth was extinguished in all other places. The Lord has still taken care of his cause, while those who ought to have been serviceable thereto have lived and perished in their sins. The Son of David will still continue a light to his church, to establish it in truth and righteousness to the end of time. There are two kinds of fulfilling the law, one legal, the other by the gospel. Legal is, when men do all things required in the law, and that by themselves. None ever thus fulfilled the law but Christ, and Adam before his fall. The gospel manner of fulfilling the law is, to believe in Christ who fulfilled the law for us, and to endeavour in the whole man to obey God in all his precepts. And this is accepted of God, as to all those that are in Christ. Thus David and others are said to fulfil the law.

Verses 9-24 Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. That is right indeed which is so in God's eyes. Asa's times were times of reformation. He removed that which was evil; there reformation begins, and a great deal he found to do. When Asa found idolatry in the court, he rooted it out thence. Reformation must begin at home. Asa honours and respects his mother; he loves her well, but he loves God better. Those that have power are happy when thus they have hearts to use it well. We must not only cease to do evil, but learn to do well; not only cast away the idols of our iniquity, but dedicate ourselves and our all to God's honour and glory. Asa was cordially devoted to the service of God, his sins not arising from presumption. But his league with Benhadad arose from unbelief. Even true believers find it hard, in times of urgent danger, to trust in the Lord with all their heart. Unbelief makes way for carnal policy, and thus for one sin after another. Unbelief has often led Christians to call in the help of the Lord's enemies in their contests with their brethren; and some who once shone brightly, have thus been covered with a dark cloud towards the end of their days.

Verses 25-34 During the single reign of Asa in Judah, the government of Israel was in six or seven different hands. Observe the ruin of the family of Jeroboam; no word of God shall fall to the ground. Divine threatenings are not designed merely to terrify. Ungodly men execute the just judgments of God upon each other. But in the midst of dreadful sins and this apparent confusion, the Lord carries on his own plan: when it is fully completed, the glorious justice, wisdom, truth, and mercy therein displayed, shall be admired and adored through all the ages of eternity.
