Josué 24

1 Y juntando Josué todas las tribus de Israel en Siquem, llamó a los ancianos de Israel, y a sus príncipes, a sus jueces, y a sus oficiales; y se presentaron delante de Dios.

2 Y dijo Josué a todo el pueblo: Así dice el SEÑOR, Dios de Israel: Vuestros padres habitaron antiguamente al otro lado del río, es a saber , Taré, padre de Abraham y de Nacor; y servían a dioses extraños.

3 Y yo tomé a vuestro padre Abraham del otro lado del río, y lo traje por toda la tierra de Canaán, y aumenté su generación, y le di a Isaac.

4 Y a Isaac di a Jacob y a Esaú; y a Esaú di el monte de Seir, que lo poseyese; mas Jacob y sus hijos descendieron a Egipto.

5 Y yo envié a Moisés y a Aarón, y herí a Egipto, al modo que lo hice en medio de él, y después os saqué.

6 Y saqué a vuestros padres de Egipto; y cuando llegaron al mar, los egipcios siguieron a vuestros padres hasta el mar Bermejo con carros y caballería.

7 Y cuando ellos clamaron al SEÑOR, él puso oscuridad entre vosotros y los egipcios, e hizo venir sobre ellos el mar, el cual los cubrió; y vuestros ojos vieron lo que hice en Egipto. Después estuvisteis muchos días en el desierto.

8 Y os introduje en la tierra de los amorreos, que habitaban al otro lado del Jordán, los cuales pelearon contra vosotros; mas yo los entregué en vuestras manos, y poseisteis su tierra, y los destruí de delante de vosotros.

9 Y se levantó después Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de los moabitas, y peleó contra Israel; y envió a llamar a Balaam hijo de Beor, para que os maldijese.

10 Mas yo no quise escuchar a Balaam, antes os bendijo repetidamente, y os libré de sus manos.

11 Y pasado el Jordán, vinisteis a Jericó; y los señores de Jericó pelearon contra vosotros: los amorreos, ferezeos, cananeos, heteos, gergeseos, heveos, y jebuseos; y yo los entregué en vuestras manos.

12 Y envié avispas delante de vosotros, los cuales los echaron de delante de vosotros, a saber , a los dos reyes de los amorreos; no con tu espada, ni con tu arco.

13 Y os di la tierra por la cual nada trabajasteis, y las ciudades que no edificasteis, en las cuales moráis; y las viñas y olivares que no plantasteis, de las cuales coméis.

14 Ahora pues, temed al SEÑOR, y servidle con perfección y con verdad; y quitad de en medio los dioses a los cuales honraron vuestros padres del otro lado del río, y en Egipto; y servid al SEÑOR.

15 Y si mal os parece servir al SEÑOR, escogeos hoy a quién sirváis; o a los dioses a quien sirvieron vuestros padres, cuando estuvieron al otro lado del río, o a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra habitáis; que yo y mi casa serviremos al SEÑOR.

16 Entonces el pueblo respondió, y dijo: Nunca tal nos acontezca, que dejemos al SEÑOR por servir a otros dioses.

17 Porque el SEÑOR nuestro Dios es el que nos sacó a nosotros y a nuestros padres de la tierra de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre; el cual delante de nuestros ojos ha hecho estas grandes señales, y nos ha guardado por todo el camino por donde hemos andado, y en todos los pueblos por entre los cuales pasamos.

18 Y el SEÑOR echó de delante de nosotros a todos los pueblos, y al amorreo que habitaba en la tierra. Por tanto nosotros también serviremos al SEÑOR, porque él es nuestro Dios.

19 Entonces Josué dijo al pueblo: No podréis servir al SEÑOR, porque él es Dios santo, y Dios celoso; no sufrirá vuestras rebeliones y vuestros pecados.

20 Si dejaréis al SEÑOR y sirviereis a dioses ajenos, se volverá, y os maltratará, y os consumirá, después que os ha hecho bien.

21 El pueblo entonces dijo a Josué: No, antes al SEÑOR serviremos.

22 Y Josué respondió al pueblo: Vosotros seréis testigos contra vosotros mismos , de que os habéis elegido al SEÑOR para servirle. Y ellos respondieron: Testigos seremos.

23 Quitad, pues, ahora los dioses ajenos que están entre vosotros, e inclinad vuestro corazón al SEÑOR Dios de Israel.

24 Y el pueblo respondió a Josué: Al SEÑOR nuestro Dios serviremos, y a su voz oiremos.

25 Entonces Josué hizo alianza con el pueblo el mismo día, y le puso ordenanzas y leyes en Siquem.

26 Y escribió Josué estas palabras en el libro de la ley de Dios; y tomando una gran piedra, la levantó allí debajo de un alcornoque que estaba en el santuario del SEÑOR.

27 Y dijo Josué a todo el pueblo: He aquí esta piedra será entre nosotros por testigo, la cual ha oído todas las palabras del SEÑOR que él ha hablado con nosotros; será, pues, testigo contra vosotros, para que por ventura no mintáis contra vuestro Dios.

28 Y envió Josué al pueblo, cada uno a su heredad.

29 Y después de estas cosas murió Josué, hijo de Nun, siervo del SEÑOR siendo de ciento diez años.

30 Y lo enterraron en el término de su posesión en Timnat-sera, que está en el monte de Efraín, al norte del monte de Gaas.

31 Y sirvió Israel al SEÑOR todo el tiempo de Josué, y todo el tiempo de los ancianos que vivieron después de Josué, y que sabían todas las obras del SEÑOR, que había hecho con Israel.

32 Y enterraron en Siquem los huesos de José que los hijos de Israel habían traído de Egipto, en la parte del campo que Jacob compró de los hijos de Hamor padre de Siquem, por cien corderas; y fue en posesión a los hijos de José.

33 También murió Eleazar, hijo de Aarón; al cual enterraron en el collado de Finees su hijo, que le fue dado en el monte de Efraín.

Josué 24 Commentary

Chapter 24

God's benefits to their fathers. (1-14) Joshua renews the covenant between the people and God. (15-28) Joshua's death, Joseph's bones buried, The state of Israel. (29-33)

Verses 1-14 We must never think our work for God done, till our life is done. If he lengthen out our days beyond what we expected, like those of Joshua, it is because he has some further service for us to do. He who aims at the same mind which was in Christ Jesus, will glory in bearing the last testimony to his Saviour's goodness, and in telling to all around, the obligations with which the unmerited goodness of God has bound him. The assembly came together in a solemn religious manner. Joshua spake to them in God's name, and as from him. His sermon consists of doctrine and application. The doctrinal part is a history of the great things God had done for his people, and for their fathers before them. The application of this history of God's mercies to them, is an exhortation to fear and serve God, in gratitude for his favour, and that it might be continued.

Verses 15-28 It is essential that the service of God's people be performed with a willing mind. For LOVE is the only genuine principle whence all acceptable service of God can spring. The Father seeks only such to worship him, as worship him in spirit and in truth. The carnal mind of man is enmity against God, therefore, is not capable of such spiritual worship. Hence the necessity of being born again. But numbers rest in mere forms, as tasks imposed upon them. Joshua puts them to their choice; but not as if it were indifferent whether they served God or not. Choose you whom ye will serve, now the matter is laid plainly before you. He resolves to do this, whatever others did. Those that are bound for heaven, must be willing to swim against the stream. They must not do as the most do, but as the best do. And no one can behave himself as he ought in any station, who does not deeply consider his religious duties in family relations. The Israelites agree with Joshua, being influenced by the example of a man who had been so great a blessing to them; We also will serve the Lord. See how much good great men do, by their influence, if zealous in religion. Joshua brings them to express full purpose of heart to cleave to the Lord. They must come off from all confidence in their own sufficiency, else their purposes would be in vain. The service of God being made their deliberate choice, Joshua binds them to it by a solemn covenant. He set up a monument of it. In this affecting manner Joshua took his last leave of them; if they perished, their blood would be upon their own heads. Though the house of God, the Lord's table, and even the walls and trees before which we have uttered our solemn purposes of serving him, would bear witness against us if we deny him, yet we may trust in him, that he will put his fear into our hearts, that we shall not depart from him. God alone can give grace, yet he blesses our endeavours to engage men to his service.

Verses 29-33 Joseph died in Egypt, but gave commandment concerning his bones, that they should not rest in their grave till Israel had rest in the land of promise. Notice also the death and burial of Joshua, and of Eleazar the chief priest. The most useful men, having served their generation, according to the will of God, one after another, fall asleep and see corruption. But Jesus, having spent and ended his life on earth more effectually than either Joshua or Joseph, rose from the dead, and saw no corruption. And the redeemed of the Lord shall inherit the kingdom he prepared for them from the foundation of the world. They will say in admiration of the grace of Jesus, Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. This chapter gives us an account of another summons of the tribes of Israel by Joshua, who obeyed it, and presented themselves before the Lord at Shechem, Jos 24:1; when Joshua in the name of the Lord rehearsed to them the many great and good things the Lord had done for them, from the time of their ancestor Abraham to that day, Jos 24:2-13; and then exhorted them to fear and serve the Lord, and reject idols, Jos 24:14; and put them upon making their choice, whether they would serve the true God, or the gods of the Canaanites; and they choosing the former, he advised them to abide by their choice, Jos 24:15-24; and made a covenant with them to that purpose, and then dismissed them, Jos 24:25-28; and the chapter is concluded with an account of the death and burial of Joshua and Eleazar, and of the interment of the bones of Joseph, Jos 24:29-33.
