Luke 22:20 Meaning and Commentary

Luke 22:20

Likewise also the cup after supper
Both after the passover, and the Lord's supper; that is, he took the cup after they had eaten the bread, and gave thanks over it, and gave it to his disciples, bidding them drink of it, as in ( Matthew 26:27 ) , (See Gill on Matthew 26:27): saying, this cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for
you.
The Ethiopic version reads, "for many"; as in ( Matthew 26:28 ) where it is added, "for the remission of sins"; (See Gill on Matthew 26:28).

Luke 22:20 In-Context

18 for I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God shall come."
19 And He took bread, and gave thanks and broke it and gave it unto them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me."
20 Likewise also He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you.
21 But behold, the hand of him that betrayeth Me is with Me on the table.
22 And truly the Son of Man goeth as it was determined; but woe unto that man by whom He is betrayed!"
