1 Chronicles 13:1 Meaning and Commentary

1 Chronicles 13:1

And David consulted with the captains of thousands,
and hundreds, and with every leader.
] With the chiliarchs and centurions, and every officer in that large body of armed men in every tribe, who met to make and crown him king: for at that time was this consultation had, and therefore is connected with it; though the affair advised about was not yet done, as Dr. Lightfoot F8 observes, and was not done until some considerable time afterwards. Advice being taken, the several officers went with their men to their respective countries, to meet again at a certain time and place to put the thing projected into execution; and between this and that time were Hiram's message to David on his accession to the throne, the taking of Jerusalem, and the two battles with the Philistines, as the same writer notes; most of which are recorded before this in the book of Samuel, and follow here.

1 Chronicles 13:1 In-Context

1 Forsooth David took counsel with [the] tribunes, and centurions, and all [the] princes (and all the leaders);
2 and he said to all the company of the sons of Israel, If it pleaseth you, and if the word that I speak goeth out from the Lord our God, send we to the remnant of our brethren to all the countries of Israel, and to [the] priests and deacons that dwell in the suburbs of cities, that they be gathered to us, (and he said to all the company of the Israelites, If it pleaseth you, and if the word that I speak goeth out from the Lord our God, then send we for the rest of our kinsmen in all the land of Israel, and for the priests and the Levites who live in the suburbs of the cities, that they be gathered to us,)
3 and that we bring again to us the ark of our God; for we sought not (at) it in the days of Saul. (and then we shall bring back the Ark of our God to us; for in the days of Saul we did not resort to it/we did not make use of it;)
4 And all the multitude answered, that it should be done so; for the word pleased all the people.
5 Therefore David gathered together all Israel, from Shihor of Egypt till that thou enter into Hamath, that he should bring the ark of God from Kiriathjearim. (And so David gathered together all Israel, from Shihor of Egypt unto Hamath, to bring back the Ark of God from Kiriathjearim.)
