and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth1 and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
But godliness with contentment2 is great gain.37
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.48
But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.59
People who want to get rich6 fall into temptation and a trap7 and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money8 is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith9 and pierced themselves with many griefs.10
But you, man of God,11 flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,12 faith, love,13 endurance and gentleness.
Fight the good fight14 of the faith. Take hold of15 the eternal life16 to which you were called when you made your good confession17 in the presence of many witnesses.
In the sight of God, who gives life to everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate18 made the good confession,19 I charge you2014
to keep this command without spot or blame21 until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,2215
which God will bring about in his own time23--God, the blessed24 and only Ruler,25 the King of kings and Lord of lords,26
