There's An App For That: How Do I Get Rid of Fear and Worry? | Matthew 6:25-27

Matthew 6:25-27
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?

How Do I Get Rid of Fear and Worry? Use worry as a signal to pray.

Worry. Concern. Apprehension. Anxiety. Our mind spins. Our stomach churns. Our heart speeds its rhythm. Fear barges in and knocks faith to the side. Our focus is zeroed in on a problem. We fret over the solution. We try to work our way around it or through it…but we can’t. The problem is bigger than we are. It is beyond our best effort. It is out of our control. So…we worry.

While some worry more than others, all of us worry. When our teenage driver is late getting home…we worry. When the job goes away, and putting food on the table is a challenge…we worry. When the doctor says, “I think we should do some tests”…we worry. And when we are waiting on the results, worry creeps in even when we do our best to drive it away.

The issue then is not, “Stop worrying!” The issue is how do I handle the inevitable emotion of worry? My advice is this: Use worry as a signal to pray. In today’s passage, Jesus makes it clear that worry is futile. It does not change the situation. So go to the One who can. The heavenly Father provides for the birds every day. “Are you not much more valuable than they?” Hand your worry over to the Father. He will replace fear with faith.

Father, right now I am worried about a particular situation. I have done everything I know to do. This situation is on my mind most of the time and often my thoughts turn to worry. So right now I hand this situation to you. I trust you to work out this situation according to your perfect will. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
