2.42. Montanus

PLUS
“The Montanists were a chiliastic sect from Asia Minor who, under the leadership of the prophet Montanus, had predicted the descent of the New Jerusalem and the end of the world. That event was supposed to have occurred in the year 177, but its failure to arrive provided reprisals against the sect, and it disappeared soon afterward. . . . Tertullian was drawn to Montanist teachings . . . concentrating to a considerable extent on their holiness teachings.”1
