27
They did not understand that
1he had been speaking to them about the Father.
28
So Jesus said to them, âWhen you have
2lifted up the Son of Man,
3then you will know that
4I am he, and that
5I do nothing on my own authority, but
6speak just as the Father taught me.
29
And
7he who sent me is with me.
8He has not left me alone, for
9I always do the things that are pleasing to him. â
30
As he was saying these things,
10many believed in him.
The Truth Will Set You Free
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him,
11âIf you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
32
and you will
12know the truth, and the truth
13will set you free. â
33
They answered him,
14âWe are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, âYou will become freeâ? â
34
Jesus answered them, âTruly, truly, I say to you,
15everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.
35
16The slave does not remain in the house forever;
17the son remains forever.
36
So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
37
I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet
18you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you.
