When he reached a certain place,1 he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head2 and lay down to sleep.
He had a dream3 in which he saw a stairwaya resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.413
There above itb stood the LORD,5 and he said: "I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.6 I will give you and your descendants the land7 on which you are lying.814
Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you9 will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south.10 All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.1115
I am with you12 and will watch over you1314 wherever you go,15 and I will bring you back to this land.16 I will not leave you17 until I have done what I have promised you.18"1916
When Jacob awoke from his sleep,20 he thought, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it."
He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place!21 This is none other than the house of God;22 this is the gate of heaven."
Early the next morning Jacob took the stone he had placed under his head23 and set it up as a pillar24 and poured oil on top of it.2519
He called that place Bethel,c26 though the city used to be called Luz.2720
Then Jacob made a vow,28 saying, "If God will be with me and will watch over me29 on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear3021
so that I return safely31 to my father's house,32 then the LORDd will be my God33
