If at any time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be uprooted,1 torn down and destroyed,
and if that nation I warned repents of its evil, then I will relent2 and not inflict on it the disaster3 I had planned.
And if at another time I announce that a nation or kingdom is to be built4 up and planted,
and if it does evil5 in my sight and does not obey me, then I will reconsider6 the good I had intended to do for it.711
"Now therefore say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, 'This is what the LORD says: Look! I am preparing a disaster8 for you and devising a plan9 against you. So turn10 from your evil ways,11 each one of you, and reform your ways and your actions.'1212
But they will reply, 'It's no use.13 We will continue with our own plans; each of us will follow the stubbornness of his evil heart.14' "
Therefore this is what the LORD says: "Inquire among the nations: Who has ever heard anything like this?15 A most horrible16 thing has been done by Virgin17 Israel.
Does the snow of Lebanon ever vanish from its rocky slopes? Do its cool waters from distant sources ever cease to flow?a15
Yet my people have forgotten18 me; they burn incense19 to worthless idols,20 which made them stumble21 in their ways and in the ancient paths.22 They made them walk in bypaths and on roads not built up.2316
Their land will be laid waste,24 an object of lasting scorn;25 all who pass by will be appalled26 and will shake their heads.2717
Like a wind28 from the east, I will scatter them before their enemies; I will show them my back and not my face29 in the day of their disaster."
