so man lies down and does not rise;1 till the heavens are no more,2 men will not awake or be roused from their sleep.3
"If only you would hide me in the grave4 and conceal me till your anger has passed!5 If only you would set me a time and then remember6 me!7
If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my hard service8 I will wait for my renewal9 to come.
You will call and I will answer you;10 you will long for the creature your hands have made.11
Surely then you will count my steps12 but not keep track of my sin.13
My offenses will be sealed14 up in a bag;15 you will cover over my sin.16
"But as a mountain erodes and crumbles17 and as a rock is moved from its place,18
as water wears away stones and torrents19 wash away the soil,20 so you destroy man's hope.21
You overpower him once for all, and he is gone;22 you change his countenance and send him away.23
If his sons are honored, he does not know it; if they are brought low, he does not see it.24
He feels but the pain of his own body25 and mourns only for himself.26"
