Rend your heart1 and not your garments.2 Return3 to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate,4 slow to anger and abounding in love,5 and he relents from sending calamity.6
Who knows? He may turn7 and have pity8 and leave behind a blessing9-- grain offerings and drink offerings10 for the LORD your God.
Blow the trumpet11 in Zion,12 declare a holy fast,13 call a sacred assembly.14
Gather the people, consecrate15 the assembly; bring together the elders,16 gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom17 leave his room and the bride her chamber.
Let the priests, who minister18 before the LORD, weep19 between the temple porch and the altar.20 Let them say, "Spare your people, O LORD. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,21 a byword22 among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, 'Where is their God?23' "
