a day of darkness1 and gloom,23 a day of clouds4 and blackness.5 Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army6 comes, such as never was of old7 nor ever will be in ages to come.
Before them fire8 devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,9 behind them, a desert waste10-- nothing escapes them.
They have the appearance of horses;11 they gallop along like cavalry.
With a noise like that of chariots12 they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire13 consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.
At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;14 every face turns pale.15
They charge like warriors;16 they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line,17 not swerving18 from their course.
They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks.
They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses;19 like thieves they enter through the windows.20
Before them the earth shakes,21 the sky trembles,22 the sun and moon are darkened,23 and the stars no longer shine.24
