So Joshua took this entire land: the hill country,1 all the Negev,2 the whole region of Goshen, the western foothills,3 the Arabah and the mountains of Israel with their foothills,
from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir,4 to Baal Gad5 in the Valley of Lebanon6 below Mount Hermon.7 He captured all their kings and struck them down, putting them to death.818
Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time.
Except for the Hivites9 living in Gibeon,10 not one city made a treaty of peace11 with the Israelites, who took them all in battle.
For it was the LORD himself who hardened their hearts12 to wage war against Israel, so that he might destroy them totally, exterminating them without mercy, as the LORD had commanded Moses.1321
At that time Joshua went and destroyed the Anakites14 from the hill country: from Hebron, Debir15 and Anab,16 from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel. Joshua totally destroyed them and their towns.
No Anakites were left in Israelite territory; only in Gaza,17 Gath18 and Ashdod19 did any survive.
So Joshua took the entire land,20 just as the LORD had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance21 to Israel according to their tribal divisions.2223 Then the land had rest24 from war.25
