Lévitique 19

1 L'Eternel parla à Moïse, et dit:

2 Parle à toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël, et tu leur diras: Soyez saints, car je suis saint, moi, l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

3 Chacun de vous respectera sa mère et son père, et observera mes sabbats. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

4 Vous ne vous tournerez point vers les idoles, et vous ne vous ferez point des dieux de fonte.

5 Quand vous offrirez à l'Eternel un sacrifice d'actions de grâces, vous l'offrirez en sorte qu'il soit agréé.

6 La victime sera mangée le jour où vous la sacrifierez, ou le lendemain; ce qui restera jusqu'au troisième jour sera brûlé au feu.

7 Si l'on en mange le troisième jour, ce sera une chose infecte: le sacrifice ne sera point agréé.

8 Celui qui en mangera portera la peine de son péché, car il profane ce qui est consacré à l'Eternel: cette personne-là sera retranchée de son peuple.

9 Quand vous ferez la moisson dans votre pays, tu laisseras un coin de ton champ sans le moissonner, et tu ne ramasseras pas ce qui reste à glaner.

10 Tu ne cueilleras pas non plus les grappes restées dans ta vigne, et tu ne ramasseras pas les grains qui en seront tombés. Tu abandonneras cela au pauvre et à l'étranger. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

11 Vous ne déroberez point, et vous n'userez ni de mensonge ni de tromperie les uns envers les autres.

12 Vous ne jurerez point faussement par mon nom, car tu profanerais le nom de ton Dieu. Je suis l'Eternel.

13 Tu n'opprimeras point ton prochain, et tu ne raviras rien par violence. Tu ne retiendras point jusqu'au lendemain le salaire du mercenaire.

14 Tu ne maudiras point un sourd, et tu ne mettras devant un aveugle rien qui puisse le faire tomber; car tu auras la crainte de ton Dieu. Je suis l'Eternel.

15 Tu ne commettras point d'iniquité dans tes jugements: tu n'auras point égard à la personne du pauvre, et tu ne favoriseras point la personne du grand, mais tu jugeras ton prochain selon la justice.

16 Tu ne répandras point de calomnies parmi ton peuple. Tu ne t'élèveras point contre le sang de ton prochain. Je suis l'Eternel.

17 Tu ne haïras point ton frère dans ton coeur; tu auras soin de reprendre ton prochain, mais tu ne te chargeras point d'un péché à cause de lui.

18 Tu ne te vengeras point, et tu ne garderas point de rancune contre les enfants de ton peuple. Tu aimeras ton prochain comme toi-même. Je suis l'Eternel.

19 Vous observerez mes lois. Tu n'accoupleras point des bestiaux de deux espèces différentes; tu n'ensemenceras point ton champ de deux espèces de semences; et tu ne porteras pas un vêtement tissé de deux espèces de fils.

20 Lorsqu'un homme couchera et aura commerce avec une femme, si c'est une esclave fiancée à un autre homme, et qui n'a pas été rachetée ou affranchie, ils seront châtiés, mais non punis de mort, parce qu'elle n'a pas été affranchie.

21 L'homme amènera pour sa faute à l'Eternel, à l'entrée de la tente d'assignation, un bélier en sacrifice de culpabilité.

22 Le sacrificateur fera pour lui l'expiation devant l'Eternel, pour le péché qu'il a commis, avec le bélier offert en sacrifice de culpabilité, et le péché qu'il a commis lui sera pardonné.

23 Quand vous serez entrés dans le pays, et que vous y aurez planté toutes sortes d'arbres fruitiers, vous en regarderez les fruits comme incirconcis; pendant trois ans, ils seront pour vous incirconcis; on n'en mangera point.

24 La quatrième année, tous leurs fruits seront consacrés à l'Eternel au milieu des réjouissances.

25 La cinquième année, vous en mangerez les fruits, et vous continuerez à les récolter. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

26 Vous ne mangerez rien avec du sang. Vous n'observerez ni les serpents ni les nuages pour en tirer des pronostics.

27 Vous ne couperez point en rond les coins de votre chevelure, et tu ne raseras point les coins de ta barbe.

28 Vous ne ferez point d'incisions dans votre chair pour un mort, et vous n'imprimerez point de figures sur vous. Je suis l'Eternel.

29 Tu ne profaneras point ta fille en la livrant à la prostitution, de peur que le pays ne se prostitue et ne se remplisse de crimes.

30 Vous observerez mes sabbats, et vous révérerez mon sanctuaire. Je suis l'Eternel.

31 Ne vous tournez point vers ceux qui évoquent les esprits, ni vers les devins; ne les recherchez point, de peur de vous souiller avec eux. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

32 Tu te lèveras devant les cheveux blancs, et tu honoreras la personne du vieillard. Tu craindras ton Dieu. Je suis l'Eternel.

33 Si un étranger vient séjourner avec vous dans votre pays, vous ne l'opprimerez point.

34 Vous traiterez l'étranger en séjour parmi vous comme un indigène du milieu de vous; vous l'aimerez comme vous-mêmes, car vous avez été étrangers dans le pays d'Egypte. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu.

35 Vous ne commettrez point d'iniquité ni dans les jugements, ni dans les mesures de dimension, ni dans les poids, ni dans les mesures de capacité.

36 Vous aurez des balances justes, des poids justes, des épha justes et des hin justes. Je suis l'Eternel, votre Dieu, qui vous ai fait sortir du pays d'Egypte.

37 Vous observerez toutes mes lois et toutes mes ordonnances, et vous les mettrez en pratique. Je suis l'Eternel.

Lévitique 19 Commentary

Chapter 19

laws.

- There are some ceremonial precepts in this chapter, but most of these precepts are binding on us, for they are explanations of the ten commandments. It is required that Israel be a holy people, because the God of Israel is a holy God, ver. ( Leviticus 19:2 ) . To teach real separation from the world and the flesh, and entire devotedness to God. This is now the law of Christ; may the Lord bring every thought within us into obedience to it! Children are to be obedient to their parents, ver. ( Leviticus 19:3 ) . The fear here required includes inward reverence and esteem, outward respect and obedience, care to please them and to make them easy. God only is to be worshipped, ver. ( Leviticus 19:4 ) . Turn not from the true God to false ones, from the God who will make you holy and happy, to those that will deceive you, and make you for ever miserable. Turn not your eyes to them, much less your heart. They should leave the gleanings of their harvest and vintage for the poor, ver. ( Leviticus 19:9 ) . Works of piety must be always attended with works of charity, according to our ability. We must not be covetous, griping, and greedy of every thing we can lay claim to, nor insist upon our right in all things. We are to be honest and true in all our dealings, ver. ( Leviticus 19:11 ) . Whatever we have in the world, we must see that we get it honestly, for we cannot be truly rich, or long rich, with that which is not so. Reverence to the sacred name of God must be shown, ver. ( Leviticus 19:12 ) . We must not detain what belongs to another, particularly the wages of the hireling, ver. ( Leviticus 19:13 ) . We must be tender of the credit and safety of those that cannot help themselves, ver. ( Leviticus 19:14 ) . Do no hurt to any, because they are unwilling or unable to avenge themselves. We ought to take heed of doing any thing which may occasion our weak brother to fall. The fear of God should keep us from doing wrong things, though they will not expose us to men's anger. Judges, and all in authority, are commanded to give judgment without partiality, ver. ( Leviticus 19:15 ) . To be a tale-bearer, and to sow discord among neighbours, is as bad an office as a man can put himself into. We are to rebuke our neighbour in love, ver. ( Leviticus 19:17 ) . Rather rebuke him than hate him, for an injury done to thyself. We incur guilt by not reproving; it is hating our brother. We should say, I will do him the kindness to tell him of his faults. We are to put off all malice, and to put on brotherly love, ver. ( Leviticus 19:18 ) . We often wrong ourselves, but we soon forgive ourselves those wrongs, and they do not at all lessen our love to ourselves; in like manner we should love our neighbour. We must in many cases deny ourselves for the good of our neighbour. Ver. ( Leviticus 19:31 ) : For Christians to have their fortunes told, to use spells and charms, or the like, is a sad affront to God. They must be grossly ignorant who ask, "What harm is there in these things?" Here is a charge to young people to show respect to the aged, ver. ( Leviticus 19:32 ) . Religion teaches good manners, and obliges us to honour those to whom honour is due. A charge was given to the Israelites to be very tender of strangers, ver. ( Leviticus 19:33 ) . Strangers, and the widows and fatherless, are God's particular care. It is at our peril, if we do them any wrong. Strangers shall be welcome to God's grace; we should do what we can to recommend religion to them. Justice in weights and measures is commanded, ver. ( Leviticus 19:35 ) . We must make conscience of obeying God's precepts. We are not to pick and choose our duty, but must aim at standing complete in all the will of God. And the nearer our lives and tempers are to the precepts of God's law, the happier shall we be, and the happier shall we make all around us, and the better shall we adorn the gospel.

This chapter contains various laws, ceremonial and moral, tending to the sanctification of men, in imitation of the holy God, Le 19:1,2; as concerning the reverence of parents, and observing the sabbaths, Le 19:3; against idolatry, Le 19:4; about offering and eating of peace offerings, Le 19:5-8; concerning harvest and gleaning of fields and vineyards, Le 19:9,10; respecting the breach of several of the commandments of the law, as the eighth, ninth, and third, particularly, Le 19:11-13; and others relating to the ill usage of the deaf and blind, and having respect to persons rich or poor in judgment, and acting the part of a tale bearer among people, Le 19:14-16; and bearing hatred and ill will to any of their neighbours, Le 19:17,18; and others forbidding mixtures in the generation of cattle, sowing fields, and wearing apparel, Le 19:19; and concerning the punishment of a man that lay with a bondmaid, and the offering he should bring for his atonement, Le 19:20-22; then follow certain laws concerning fruit trees, when the fruit of them should be eaten, Le 19:23-25; and concerning eating with blood, using enchantments, and observing times, and managing the hair of the head and beard, and avoiding to make any marks, prints, and cuttings in the flesh for the dead, Le 19:26-28; a caution not to prostitute a daughter to whoredom, and to observe the sabbath, and reverence the sanctuary of God, and pay no regard to wizards and familiar spirits, Le 19:29-31; to show reverence to ancient persons, and not to vex and distress strangers, Le 19:32-34; and to do no injustice in weight and measure, Le 19:35,36; all which instructions are to be carefully observed, and put in execution, Le 19:37.
