But the bystanderssaid, "Do you revileGod'shighpriest?

And Paulsaid, "I was not aware, brethren, that he was highpriest; for it is written, '1YOU SHALL NOT SPEAKEVIL OF A RULER OF YOUR PEOPLE.' "

But perceiving that onegroup were 2Sadducees and the otherPharisees, Paul began crying out in 3the Council, "4Brethren*, 5I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees; I am on trial for 6the hope and resurrection of the dead!"

As he saidthis, there occurred a dissension between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.

For 7the Sadduceessay that there is noresurrection, nor an angel, nor a spirit, but the Phariseesacknowledge them all.

And there occurred a greatuproar; and some of 8the scribes of the Pharisaicpartystood up and began to argueheatedly, saying, "9We findnothingwrong with thisman; 10suppose* a spiritor an angel has spoken to him?"

And as a greatdissension was developing, the commander was afraidPaul would be torn to pieces by them and ordered the troops to godown and take him away from them by force, and bring him into 11the barracks.

But on 12the night immediately following, the Lordstood at his side and said, "13Takecourage; for 14as you have 15solemnlywitnessed to My cause* at Jerusalem, so you mustwitness at Romealso."
A Conspiracy to Kill Paul
12 When it was day, 16the Jewsformed a conspiracy and 17boundthemselvesunder an oath, saying that they would neithereatnordrinkuntil they had killedPaul.
