Jeremiah 36:9-32

Now in the 1fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the 2ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who 3came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem proclaimed a 4fast before the LORD.
Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the 5chamber of 6Gemariah the son of Shaphan the 7scribe, in the upper court, at the 8entry of the New Gate of the LORD'S house, to all the people.
Now when 9Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard all the words of the LORD from the book,
he went down to the king's house, into the scribe's chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there -10Elishama the scribe, and 11Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and 12Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials.
Micaiah 13declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book to the people.
Then all the officials sent 14Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, "Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read to the people and come." So Baruch the son of Neriah 15took the scroll in his hand and went to them.
They said to him, "Sit down, please, and read it to us." So Baruch 16read it to them.
When they had heard all the words, they turned in 17fear one to another and said to Baruch, "We will surely 18report all these words to the king."
And they asked Baruch, saying, "Tell us, please, 19how did you write all these words? Was it at his dictation?"
Then Baruch said to them, "He 20dictated * * all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book."
Then the officials said to Baruch, "Go, 21hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are."

The Scroll Is Burned

So they went to the 22king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of 23Elishama the scribe, and they reported * all the words to the king.
Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi 24read it to the king as well as to all the officials who stood beside * the king.
Now the king was sitting in the 25winter house in the 26ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him.
When Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe's knife and 27threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier.
Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words were 28not afraid, nor did they 29rend their garments.
Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah 30pleaded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them.
And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to 31seize Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but the 32LORD hid them.

The Scroll Is Replaced

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after the king had 33burned the scroll and the words which 34Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying,
"35Take again another scroll and write on it all the former words that were 36on the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned.
"And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, 'Thus says the LORD, "You have 37burned this scroll, saying, '38Why have you written on it that the 39king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land, and will make man and beast to cease from it?' "
'Therefore thus says the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, "He shall have 40no one to sit on the throne of David, and his 41dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
"I will also 42punish him and his descendants and his servants for their iniquity, and I will 43bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the calamity that I have declared to them-but they did not listen.""'
Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the scribe, and he 44wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.

Jeremiah 36:9-32 Meaning and Commentary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 36

This chapter gives an account of an impious action of King Jehoiakim's burning the roll of Jeremiah's prophecies read unto him, and the consequence of it. The order to write this roll, the time when, the contents and use of it, are in Jer 36:1-3; the writing of it by Baruch, the order of the prophet to read it to the people on such a day, with the view he had in so doing, Jer 36:4-7; the reading of it by Baruch to the people first, Jer 36:8-10; then to the princes, being sent for by them, upon a report made to them, Jer 36:11-15; the king being acquainted with it, Jehudi was sent to fetch the roll, who read it to the king, Jer 36:16-21; who having heard part of it, burnt it, notwithstanding the intercession of some of his princes to the contrary, Jer 36:22-25; and who also ordered the apprehension of Jeremiah and Baruch, who could not be found, Jer 36:26; upon this a new roll is ordered to be written, Jer 36:27,28; which was done with some additions to it, respecting the destruction of the land, and the people in it, by the Chaldeans; and particularly the death of the king, and his want of burial, Jer 36:29-32.
