Now afterAbimelech died, Tola the son of Puah, the son of Dodo, a man of Issachar, 1arose to saveIsrael; and he lived in Shamir in the hillcountry of Ephraim.
He judgedIsraeltwenty-threeyears. Then he died and was buried in Shamir.
3After him, Jair the Gileaditearose and judgedIsraeltwenty-twoyears.
He hadthirtysons who rode on thirtydonkeys, and they had thirtycitiesain the land of Gilead2that are calledbHavvoth-jair to thisday.
And Jairdied and was buried in Kamon.
Then the sons of Israelagaindidevil in the sight of the LORD, 3served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, 4the gods of the sons of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines; thus 5they forsook the LORD and did not serve Him.
The anger of the LORDburned against Israel, and He 6sold them into the hands of the Philistines and into the hands of the sons of Ammon.
They cafflicted and crushed the sons of Israeldthat year; for eighteenyears they afflicted all the sons of Israelwho were beyond the Jordanein Gilead in the land of the Amorites.
The sons of Ammoncrossed the Jordan to fightalso against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was greatlydistressed.
Then the 7sons of Israelcried out to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against You, for indeed, we have forsaken our God and served the Baals."
The LORDsaid to the sons of Israel, "Did I not deliver you 8from the Egyptians, 9the Amorites, 10the sons of Ammon, and the Philistines?
"Also when the Sidonians, the Amalekites and the Maonites11oppressed you, you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hands.
"Yet 12you have forsaken Me and servedothergods; therefore I will nolongerdeliver you.
"13Go and cry out to the godswhich you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress."
The sons of Israelsaid to the LORD, "We have sinned, 14do to us whatever seems good to You; onlypleasedeliver us thisday."
1615So they putaway the foreigngods from among them and served the LORD; and f16He couldbear the misery of Israelnolonger.
Then the sons of Ammon were summoned and they camped in Gilead. And the sons of Israelgathered together and camped in 17Mizpah.
The people, the leaders of Gilead, said to oneanother, "Who is the manwho will begin to fight against the sons of Ammon? He shall becomehead over all the inhabitants of Gilead."
