Lamentations 2

God's Anger over Israel

1 How the Lord has 1covered the daughter of Zion With a cloud in His anger! He has 2cast from heaven to earth The 3glory of Israel, And has not remembered His 4footstool * In the day of His anger.
2 The Lord has 5swallowed up; He has not spared All the habitations of Jacob. In His wrath He has 6thrown down The strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He has 7brought them down to the ground; He has 8profaned the kingdom and its princes.
3 In fierce anger He has cut off All the 9strength of Israel; He has 10drawn back His right hand From before the enemy. And He has 11burned in Jacob like a flaming fire Consuming round about.
4 He has bent His 12bow like an enemy; He has set His right hand like an adversary And slain all that were 13pleasant to the eye; In the tent of the daughter of Zion He has 14poured out His wrath like fire.
5 The Lord has become like an 15enemy. He has 16swallowed up Israel; He has swallowed up all its 17palaces, He has destroyed its strongholds And 18multiplied in the daughter of Judah Mourning and moaning.
6 And He has violently treated His tabernacle like a garden booth; He has 19destroyed His appointed meeting place. The LORD has 20caused to be forgotten The appointed feast and sabbath in Zion, And He has 21despised king and priest In the indignation of His anger.
7 The Lord has 22rejected His altar, He has abandoned His sanctuary; He 23has delivered into the hand of the enemy The walls of her palaces. They have made a 24noise in the house of the LORD As in the day of an appointed feast.
8 The LORD determined to destroy The wall of the daughter of Zion. He has 25stretched out a line, He has not restrained His hand from destroying, And He has 26caused rampart and wall to lament; They have languished together.
9 Her 27gates have sunk into the ground, He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her princes are among the nations; The 28law is no more. Also, her prophets find 29No vision from the LORD.
10 The elders of the daughter of Zion 30Sit on the ground, they 31are silent. They have thrown 32dust on their heads; They have girded themselves with 33sackcloth. The 34virgins of Jerusalem Have bowed their heads to the ground.
11 My 35eyes fail because of tears, My 36spirit is greatly troubled; My 37heart is poured out on the earth 38Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, When 39little ones and infants faint In the streets of the city.
12 They say to their mothers, "40Where is grain and wine?" As they faint like a wounded man In the streets of the city, As their 41life is poured out On their mothers' bosom.
13 How shall I admonish you? To what 42shall I compare you, O daughter of Jerusalem? To what shall I liken you as I comfort you, O 43virgin daughter of Zion? For your ruin is as vast as the sea; Who can 44heal you?
14 Your 45prophets have seen for you False and foolish visions; And they have not 46exposed your iniquity So as to restore you from captivity, But they have 47seen for you false and misleading oracles.
15 All who pass along the way 48Clap their hands in derision at you; They 49hiss and shake their heads At the daughter of Jerusalem, "Is this the city of which they said, '50The perfection of beauty, 51A joy to all the earth '?"
16 All 52your enemies Have opened their mouths wide against you; They hiss and 53gnash their teeth. They say, "We have 54swallowed her up! Surely this is the 55day for which we waited; We have reached it, we have seen it."
17 The LORD has 56done what He purposed; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from days of old. He has thrown down 57without sparing, And He has caused the enemy to 58rejoice over you; He has 59exalted the might of your adversaries.
18 Their 60heart cried out to the Lord, "O 61wall of the daughter of Zion, Let your 62tears run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief, Let your eyes have no rest.
19 "Arise, cry aloud in the 63night At the beginning of the night watches; 64Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord; Lift up your hands to Him For the 65life of your little ones Who are 66faint because of hunger At the head of every street."
20 See, O LORD, and look! With 67whom have You dealt thus? Should women 68eat their offspring, The little ones who were born healthy? Should 69priest and prophet be slain In the sanctuary of the Lord?
21 On the ground in the streets Lie 70young and old; My 71virgins and my young men Have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of Your anger, You have slaughtered, 72not sparing.
22 You called as in the day of an appointed feast My 73terrors on every side; And there was 74no one who escaped or survived In the day of the LORD'S anger. Those 75whom I bore and reared, My enemy annihilated them.

Lamentations 2 Commentary

Chapter 2

Lamentation for the misery of Jerusalem.

Verses 1-9 A sad representation is here made of the state of God's church, of Jacob and Israel; but the notice seems mostly to refer to the hand of the Lord in their calamities. Yet God is not an enemy to his people, when he is angry with them and corrects them. And gates and bars stand in no stead when God withdraws his protection. It is just with God to cast down those by judgments, who debase themselves by sin; and to deprive those of the benefit and comfort of sabbaths and ordinances, who have not duly valued nor observed them. What should they do with Bibles, who make no improvement of them? Those who misuse God's prophets, justly lose them. It becomes necessary, though painful, to turn the thoughts of the afflicted to the hand of God lifted up against them, and to their sins as the source of their miseries.

Verses 10-22 Causes for lamentation are described. Multitudes perished by famine. Even little children were slain by their mother's hands, and eaten, according to the threatening, ( Deuteronomy 28:53 ) . Multitudes fell by the sword. Their false prophets deceived them. And their neighbours laughed at them. It is a great sin to jest at others' miseries, and adds much affliction to the afflicted. Their enemies triumphed over them. The enemies of the church are apt to take its shocks for its ruins; but they will find themselves deceived. Calls to lamentation are given; and comforts for the cure of these lamentations are sought. Prayer is a salve for every sore, even the sorest; a remedy for every malady, even the most grievous. Our business in prayer is to refer our case to the Lord, and leave it with him. His will be done. Let us fear God, and walk humbly before him, and take heed lest we fall.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO LAMENTATIONS 2

This chapter contains another alphabet, in which the Prophet Jeremiah, or those he represents, lament the sad condition of Jerusalem; the destruction of the city and temple, and of all persons and things relative to them, and to its civil or church state; and that as being from the hand of the Lord himself, who is represented all along as the author thereof, because of their sins, La 2:1-9; and then the elders and virgins of Zion are represented as in great distress, and weeping for those desolations; which were very much owing to the false prophets, that had deceived them, La 2:10-14; and all this occasioned great rejoicing in the enemies of Zion, La 2:15-17; but sorrow of heart to Zion herself, who is called to weeping, La 2:18,19; and the chapter is concluded with an address to the Lord, to take this her sorrowful case into consideration, and show pity and compassion, La 2:20-22.
