51
And behold, 1one of thosewho were with Jesusreached and drew out his 2sword, and struck the 3slave of the highpriest and cutoff his ear.
52
ThenJesussaid to him, "Put your swordback into its place; for 4allthose who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.
53
"Or do you think that I cannot*appeal to My Father, and He will at onceput at My disposalmore than twelve5legions of 6angels?
54
"Howthen will 7the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it musthappenthisway?"
55
At that timeJesussaid to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? 8Everyday I used to sit in the templeteaching and you did not seize Me.
56
"But allthis has takenplace to fulfill9the Scriptures of the prophets."Thenall the disciplesleft Him and fled.
Jesus before Caiaphas
5710Those who had seizedJesusled Him away to 11Caiaphas, the highpriest, where the scribes and the elders were gatheredtogether.
58
But 12Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the 13courtyard of the highpriest, and entered in, and satdown with the 14officers to see the outcome.
59
Now the chiefpriests and the whole15Council kept trying to obtainfalsetestimonyagainstJesus, so that they might put Him to death.
60
They did not find any, even though manyfalsewitnessescameforward. But later on 16twocameforward,
61
and said, "Thismanstated, '17I amable to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in threedays.' "
62
The highprieststood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that thesemen are testifyingagainst You?"
63
But 18Jesuskeptsilent. 19And the highpriestsaid to Him, "I 20adjure You by 21the livingGod, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, 22the Son of God."
64
Jesussaid to him, "23You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter* you will see24THE SON OF MANSITTING AT THE RIGHTHAND OF POWER, and 25COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
65
Then the highpriest26tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! Whatfurtherneed do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have nowheard the blasphemy;
66
what do you think?" They answered, "27He deservesdeath!"
67
28Then they 29spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and othersslapped Him,
68
and said, "30Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?"
Peter's Denials
6931NowPeter was sittingoutside in the 32courtyard, and a servant-girlcame to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean."
70
But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not knowwhat you are talking about."
71
When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to thosewho were there, "Thisman was with Jesus of Nazareth."
72
And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man."
73
A littlelater the bystanderscame up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; 33for even the way you talkgives you away*."
74
Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a roostercrowed.
75
And Peterremembered the word which Jesus had said, "34Before a roostercrows, you will deny Me threetimes." And he went out and weptbitterly.
