Levítico 17

1 Prohibición de comer sangre
Entonces el Señor
le dijo a Moisés:

2 «Da las siguientes instrucciones a Aarón, a sus hijos y a todo el pueblo de Israel. Esto ha ordenado el Señor
:

3 si algún israelita de nacimiento sacrifica un toro,
un cordero o una cabra, dentro o fuera del campamento

4 en vez de llevarlo a la entrada del tabernáculo
para presentarlo como una ofrenda al Señor
, esa persona será tan culpable como un asesino.
Esa persona ha derramado sangre y será excluida de la comunidad.

5 El propósito de esta regla es evitar que los israelitas sacrifiquen animales en campo abierto; asegurará que lleven sus sacrificios al sacerdote a la entrada del tabernáculo, para que él pueda presentar los animales al Señor
como ofrendas de paz.

6 Entonces el sacerdote podrá salpicar la sangre sobre el altar del Señor
a la entrada del tabernáculo, y podrá quemar la grasa como un aroma agradable al Señor
.

7 El pueblo ya no debe serle infiel al Señor
al ofrecer sacrificios a ídolos que tienen forma de cabra.
Esta es una ley perpetua para el pueblo, tendrá que obedecerla de generación en generación.

8 »Dales también este mandamiento: si algún israelita de nacimiento o extranjero que viva entre ustedes ofrece una ofrenda quemada o un sacrificio,

9 pero no lo lleva a la entrada del tabernáculo para ofrecerlo al Señor
, esa persona será excluida de la comunidad.

10 »Si algún israelita de nacimiento o extranjero que viva entre ustedes come o bebe sangre en cualquier forma, yo me pondré en contra de esa persona y la excluiré de la comunidad,

11 porque la vida del cuerpo está en la sangre. Les he dado la sangre sobre el altar con el fin de purificarlos, para hacerlos justos ante el Señor
.
Es la sangre, dada a cambio de una vida, la que hace posible la purificación.

12 Por esta razón le he dicho al pueblo de Israel: “Nunca coman ni beban sangre, ni ustedes ni los extranjeros que vivan entre ustedes”.

13 »Si algún israelita de nacimiento o extranjero que viva entre ustedes va de caza y mata un animal o ave que se permite comer, deberá escurrirle la sangre y cubrirla con tierra.

14 La vida de toda criatura está en su sangre. Por eso he dicho al pueblo de Israel: “Nunca coman ni beban sangre, porque la vida de toda criatura está en su sangre”. Así que cualquiera que consuma sangre será excluido de la comunidad.

15 »Y si algún israelita de nacimiento o extranjero come la carne de un animal que murió de forma natural o fue despedazado por animales salvajes, deberá lavar su ropa y bañarse con agua. Permanecerá ceremonialmente impuro hasta el anochecer, después de eso quedará puro;

16 pero si no lava su ropa y no se baña, será castigado por su pecado».

Levítico 17 Commentary

Chapter 17

All sacrifices to be offered at the tabernacle. (1-9) Eating of blood, or of animals which died a natural death, forbidden. (10-16)

Verses 1-9 All the cattle killed by the Israelites, while in the wilderness, were to be presented before the door of the tabernacle, and the flesh to be returned to the offerer, to be eaten as a peace-offering, according to the law. When they entered Canaan, this only continued in respect of sacrifices. The spiritual sacrifices we are now to offer, are not confined to any one place. We have now no temple or altar that sanctifies the gift; nor does the gospel unity rest only in one place, but in one heart, and the unity of the Spirit. Christ is our Altar, and the true Tabernacle; in him God dwells among men. It is in him that our sacrifices are acceptable to God, and in him only. To set up other mediators, or other altars, or other expiatory sacrifices, is, in effect, to set up other gods. And though God will graciously accept our family offerings, we must not therefore neglect attending at the tabernacle.

Verses 10-16 Here is a confirmation of the law against eating blood. They must eat no blood. But this law was ceremonial, and is now no longer in force; the coming of the substance does away the shadow. The blood of beasts is no longer the ransom, but Christ's blood only; therefore there is not now the reason for abstaining there then was. The blood is now allowed for the nourishment of our bodies; it is no longer appointed to make an atonement for the soul. Now the blood of Christ makes atonement really and effectually; to that, therefore, we must have regard, and not consider it as a common thing, or treat it with indifference.

In this chapter a law is given, ordering all sorts of persons, Israelites and sojourners, to bring their sacrifices to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, on pain of being cut off, Le 17:1-9; and a special and particular prohibition of sacrificing to devils is delivered out, Le 17:7; and the eating of blood, and of everything that dies of itself, or is torn with beasts, is forbidden under the above penalty, Le 17:10-16.
