Now Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the region. 1 Now Dinah, the daughter Leah had borne to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.
When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the region, saw her, he seized her and lay with her by force. 2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of that area, saw her, he took her and violated her.
And his soul was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob; he loved the girl, and spoke tenderly to her. 3 His heart was drawn to Dinah daughter of Jacob, and he loved the girl and spoke tenderly to her.
So Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, "Get me this girl to be my wife." 4 And Shechem said to his father Hamor, "Get me this girl as my wife."
Now Jacob heard that Shechem had defiled his daughter Dinah; but his sons were with his cattle in the field, so Jacob held his peace until they came. 5 When Jacob heard that his daughter Dinah had been defiled, his sons were in the fields with his livestock; so he kept quiet about it until they came home.
And Hamor the father of Shechem went out to Jacob to speak with him, 6 Then Shechem's father Hamor went out to talk with Jacob.
just as the sons of Jacob came in from the field. When they heard of it, the men were indignant and very angry, because he had committed an outrage in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter, for such a thing ought not to be done. 7 Now Jacob's sons had come in from the fields as soon as they heard what had happened. They were filled with grief and fury, because Shechem had done a disgraceful thing in Israel by lying with Jacob's daughter--a thing that should not be done.
But Hamor spoke with them, saying, "The heart of my son Shechem longs for your daughter; please give her to him in marriage. 8 But Hamor said to them, "My son Shechem has his heart set on your daughter. Please give her to him as his wife.
Make marriages with us; give your daughters to us, and take our daughters for yourselves. 9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.
You shall live with us; and the land shall be open to you; live and trade in it, and get property in it." 10 You can settle among us; the land is open to you. Live in it, trade in it, and acquire property in it."
Shechem also said to her father and to her brothers, "Let me find favor with you, and whatever you say to me I will give. 11 Then Shechem said to Dinah's father and brothers, "Let me find favor in your eyes, and I will give you whatever you ask.
Put the marriage present and gift as high as you like, and I will give whatever you ask me; only give me the girl to be my wife." 12 Make the price for the bride and the gift I am to bring as great as you like, and I'll pay whatever you ask me. Only give me the girl as my wife."
The sons of Jacob answered Shechem and his father Hamor deceitfully, because he had defiled their sister Dinah. 13 Because their sister Dinah had been defiled, Jacob's sons replied deceitfully as they spoke to Shechem and his father Hamor.
They said to them, "We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a disgrace to us. 14 They said to them, "We can't do such a thing; we can't give our sister to a man who is not circumcised. That would be a disgrace to us.
Only on this condition will we consent to you: that you will become as we are and every male among you be circumcised. 15 We will give our consent to you on one condition only: that you become like us by circumcising all your males.
Then we will give our daughters to you, and we will take your daughters for ourselves, and we will live among you and become one people. 16 Then we will give you our daughters and take your daughters for ourselves. We'll settle among you and become one people with you.
But if you will not listen to us and be circumcised, then we will take our daughter and be gone." 17 But if you will not agree to be circumcised, we'll take our sister and go."
Their words pleased Hamor and Hamor's son Shechem. 18 Their proposal seemed good to Hamor and his son Shechem.
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter. Now he was the most honored of all his family. 19 The young man, who was the most honored of all his father's household, lost no time in doing what they said, because he was delighted with Jacob's daughter.
So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying, 20 So Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their city to speak to their fellow townsmen.
"These people are friendly with us; let them live in the land and trade in it, for the land is large enough for them; let us take their daughters in marriage, and let us give them our daughters. 21 "These men are friendly toward us," they said. "Let them live in our land and trade in it; the land has plenty of room for them. We can marry their daughters and they can marry ours.
Only on this condition will they agree to live among us, to become one people: that every male among us be circumcised as they are circumcised. 22 But the men will consent to live with us as one people only on the condition that our males be circumcised, as they themselves are.
Will not their livestock, their property, and all their animals be ours? Only let us agree with them, and they will live among us." 23 Won't their livestock, their property and all their other animals become ours? So let us give our consent to them, and they will settle among us."
And all who went out of the city gate heeded Hamor and his son Shechem; and every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city. 24 All the men who went out of the city gate agreed with Hamor and his son Shechem, and every male in the city was circumcised.
On the third day, when they were still in pain, two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and came against the city unawares, and killed all the males. 25 Three days later, while all of them were still in pain, two of Jacob's sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brothers, took their swords and attacked the unsuspecting city, killing every male.
They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went away. 26 They put Hamor and his son Shechem to the sword and took Dinah from Shechem's house and left.
And the other sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because their sister had been defiled. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the dead bodies and looted the city where their sister had been defiled.
They took their flocks and their herds, their donkeys, and whatever was in the city and in the field. 28 They seized their flocks and herds and donkeys and everything else of theirs in the city and out in the fields.
All their wealth, all their little ones and their wives, all that was in the houses, they captured and made their prey. 29 They carried off all their wealth and all their women and children, taking as plunder everything in the houses.
Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me odious to the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites and the Perizzites; my numbers are few, and if they gather themselves against me and attack me, I shall be destroyed, both I and my household." 30 Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, "You have brought trouble on me by making me a stench to the Canaanites and Perizzites, the people living in this land. We are few in number, and if they join forces against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed."
But they said, "Should our sister be treated like a whore?" 31 But they replied, "Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?"
