The Latin Vulgate (VUL) New International Version (NIV)
Adam vero cognovit Havam uxorem suam quae concepit et peperit Cain dicens possedi hominem per Dominum 1 Adam lay with his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the LORD I have brought forth a man."
rursusque peperit fratrem eius Abel fuit autem Abel pastor ovium et Cain agricola 2 Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.
factum est autem post multos dies ut offerret Cain de fructibus terrae munera Domino 3 In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.
Abel quoque obtulit de primogenitis gregis sui et de adipibus eorum et respexit Dominus ad Abel et ad munera eius 4 But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering,
ad Cain vero et ad munera illius non respexit iratusque est Cain vehementer et concidit vultus eius 5 but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.
dixitque Dominus ad eum quare maestus es et cur concidit facies tua 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast?
nonne si bene egeris recipies sin autem male statim in foribus peccatum aderit sed sub te erit appetitus eius et tu dominaberis illius 7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."
dixitque Cain ad Abel fratrem suum egrediamur foras cumque essent in agro consurrexit Cain adversus Abel fratrem suum et interfecit eum 8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
et ait Dominus ad Cain ubi est Abel frater tuus qui respondit nescio num custos fratris mei sum 9 Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?" "I don't know," he replied. "Am I my brother's keeper?"
dixitque ad eum quid fecisti vox sanguinis fratris tui clamat ad me de terra 10 The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground.
nunc igitur maledictus eris super terram quae aperuit os suum et suscepit sanguinem fratris tui de manu tua 11 Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
cum operatus fueris eam non dabit tibi fructus suos vagus et profugus eris super terram 12 When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."
dixitque Cain ad Dominum maior est iniquitas mea quam ut veniam merear 13 Cain said to the LORD, "My punishment is more than I can bear.
ecce eicis me hodie a facie terrae et a facie tua abscondar et ero vagus et profugus in terra omnis igitur qui invenerit me occidet me 14 Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."
dixitque ei Dominus nequaquam ita fiet sed omnis qui occiderit Cain septuplum punietur posuitque Dominus Cain signum ut non eum interficeret omnis qui invenisset eum 15 But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
egressusque Cain a facie Domini habitavit in terra profugus ad orientalem plagam Eden 16 So Cain went out from the LORD's presence and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
cognovit autem Cain uxorem suam quae concepit et peperit Enoch et aedificavit civitatem vocavitque nomen eius ex nomine filii sui Enoch 17 Cain lay with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.
porro Enoch genuit Irad et Irad genuit Maviahel et Maviahel genuit Matusahel et Matusahel genuit Lamech 18 To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.
qui accepit uxores duas nomen uni Ada et nomen alteri Sella 19 Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.
genuitque Ada Iabel qui fuit pater habitantium in tentoriis atque pastorum 20 Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.
et nomen fratris eius Iubal ipse fuit pater canentium cithara et organo 21 His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play the harp and flute.
Sella quoque genuit Thubalcain qui fuit malleator et faber in cuncta opera aeris et ferri soror vero Thubalcain Noemma 22 Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.
dixitque Lamech uxoribus suis Adae et Sellae audite vocem meam uxores Lamech auscultate sermonem meum quoniam occidi virum in vulnus meum et adulescentulum in livorem meum 23 Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to me; wives of Lamech, hear my words. I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for injuring me.
septuplum ultio dabitur de Cain de Lamech vero septuagies septies 24 If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."
cognovit quoque adhuc Adam uxorem suam et peperit filium vocavitque nomen eius Seth dicens posuit mihi Deus semen aliud pro Abel quem occidit Cain 25 Adam lay with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."
sed et Seth natus est filius quem vocavit Enos iste coepit invocare nomen Domini 26 Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call on the name of the LORD.
