The Message (MSG) New International Version (NIV)
"We all know how silver seams the rocks, we've seen the stuff from which gold is refined, 1 "There is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined.
We're aware of how iron is dug out of the ground and copper is smelted from rock. 2 Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore.
Miners penetrate the earth's darkness, searching the roots of the mountains for ore, digging away in the suffocating darkness. 3 Man puts an end to the darkness; he searches the farthest recesses for ore in the blackest darkness.
Far from civilization, far from the traffic, they cut a shaft, and are lowered into it by ropes. 4 Far from where people dwell he cuts a shaft, in places forgotten by the foot of man; far from men he dangles and sways.
Earth's surface is a field for grain, but its depths are a forge 5 The earth, from which food comes, is transformed below as by fire;
Firing sapphires from stones and chiseling gold from rocks. 6 sapphires come from its rocks, and its dust contains nuggets of gold.
Vultures are blind to its riches, hawks never lay eyes on it. 7 No bird of prey knows that hidden path, no falcon's eye has seen it.
Wild animals are oblivious to it, lions don't know it's there. 8 Proud beasts do not set foot on it, and no lion prowls there.
Miners hammer away at the rock, they uproot the mountains. 9 Man's hand assaults the flinty rock and lays bare the roots of the mountains.
They tunnel through the rock and find all kinds of beautiful gems. 10 He tunnels through the rock; his eyes see all its treasures.
They discover the origins of rivers, and bring earth's secrets to light. 11 He searches the sources of the rivers and brings hidden things to light.
"But where, oh where, will they find Wisdom? Where does Insight hide? 12 "But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?
Mortals don't have a clue, haven't the slightest idea where to look. 13 Man does not comprehend its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living.
Earth's depths say, 'It's not here'; ocean deeps echo, 'Never heard of it.' 14 The deep says, 'It is not in me'; the sea says, 'It is not with me.'
It can't be bought with the finest gold; no amount of silver can get it. 15 It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed in silver.
Even famous Ophir gold can't buy it, not even diamonds and sapphires. 16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx or sapphires.
Neither gold nor emeralds are comparable; extravagant jewelry can't touch it. 17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold.
Pearl necklaces and ruby bracelets - why bother? None of this is even a down payment on Wisdom! 18 Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.
Pile gold and African diamonds as high as you will, they can't hold a candle to Wisdom. 19 The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold.
"So where does Wisdom come from? And where does Insight live? 20 "Where then does wisdom come from? Where does understanding dwell?
It can't be found by looking, no matter how deep you dig, no matter how high you fly. 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing, concealed even from the birds of the air.
If you search through the graveyard and question the dead, they say, 'We've only heard rumors of it.' 22 Destruction and Death say, 'Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.'
"God alone knows the way to Wisdom, he knows the exact place to find it. 23 God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,
He knows where everything is on earth, he sees everything under heaven. 24 for he views the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.
After he commanded the winds to blow and measured out the waters, 25 When he established the force of the wind and measured out the waters,
Arranged for the rain and set off explosions of thunder and lightning, 26 when he made a decree for the rain and a path for the thunderstorm,
He focused on Wisdom, made sure it was all set and tested and ready. 27 then he looked at wisdom and appraised it; he confirmed it and tested it.
Then he addressed the human race: 'Here it is! Fear-of-the-Lord - that's Wisdom, and Insight means shunning evil.'" 28 And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.' "
