Good News Translation (GNT) New International Version (NIV)
I am one who knows what it is to be punished by God. 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.
He drove me deeper and deeper into darkness 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light;
And beat me again and again with merciless blows. 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long.
He has left my flesh open and raw, and has broken my bones. 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones.
He has shut me in a prison of misery and anguish. 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
He has forced me to live in the stagnant darkness of death. 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead.
He has bound me in chains; I am a prisoner with no hope of escape. 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains.
I cry aloud for help, but God refuses to listen; 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer.
I stagger as I walk; stone walls block me wherever I turn. 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked.
He waited for me like a bear; he pounced on me like a lion. 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding,
He chased me off the road, tore me to pieces, and left me. 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help.
He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows.
He shot his arrows deep into my body. 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver.
People laugh at me all day long; I am a joke to them all. 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long.
Bitter suffering is all he has given me for food and drink. 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall.
He rubbed my face in the ground and broke my teeth on rocks. 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust.
I have forgotten what health and peace and happiness are. 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is.
I do not have much longer to live; my hope in the Lord is gone. 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD."
The thought of my pain, my homelessness, is bitter poison. 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall.
I think of it constantly, and my spirit is depressed. 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me.
Yet hope returns when I remember this one thing: 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope:
The Lord's unfailing love and mercy still continue, 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
Fresh as the morning, as sure as the sunrise. 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
The Lord is all I have, and so in him I put my hope. 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him."
The Lord is good to everyone who trusts in him, 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him;
So it is best for us to wait in patience - to wait for him to save us - 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
And it is best to learn this patience in our youth. 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young.
When we suffer, we should sit alone in silent patience; 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him.
We should bow in submission, for there may still be hope. 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope.
Though beaten and insulted, we should accept it all. 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace.
The Lord is merciful and will not reject us forever. 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever.
He may bring us sorrow, but his love for us is sure and strong. 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love.
He takes no pleasure in causing us grief or pain. 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men.
The Lord knows when our spirits are crushed in prison; 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land,
He knows when we are denied the rights he gave us; 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High,
When justice is perverted in court, he knows. 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things?
The will of the Lord alone is always carried out. 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it?
Good and evil alike take place at his command. 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come?
Why should we ever complain when we are punished for our sin? 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins?
Let us examine our ways and turn back to the Lord. 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.
Let us open our hearts to God in heaven and pray, 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say:
"We have sinned and rebelled, and you, O Lord, have not forgiven us. 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven.
"You pursued us and killed us; your mercy was hidden by your anger, 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity.
By a cloud of fury too thick for our prayers to get through. 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through.
You have made us the garbage dump of the world. 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.
"We are insulted and mocked by all our enemies. 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us.
We have been through disaster and ruin; we live in danger and fear. 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction."
My eyes flow with rivers of tears at the destruction of my people. 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed.
"My tears will pour out in a ceaseless stream 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief,
Until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees us. 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
My heart is grieved when I see what has happened to the women of the city. 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city.
"I was trapped like a bird by enemies who had no cause to hate me. 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird.
They threw me alive into a pit and closed the opening with a stone. 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me;
Water began to close over me, and I thought death was near. 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off.
"From the bottom of the pit, O Lord, I cried out to you, 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit.
And when I begged you to listen to my cry, you heard. 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief."
You answered me and told me not to be afraid. 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear."
"You came to my rescue, Lord, and saved my life. 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life.
Judge in my favor; you know the wrongs done against me. 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause!
You know how my enemies hate me and how they plot against me. 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me.
"You have heard them insult me, O Lord; you know all their plots. 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me--
All day long they talk about me and make their plans. 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long.
From morning till night they make fun of me. 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs.
"Punish them for what they have done, O Lord; 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done.
Curse them and fill them with despair! 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them!
Hunt them down and wipe them off the earth!" 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
