New Century Version (NCV) New International Version (NIV)
A wise woman strengthens her family, but a foolish woman destroys hers by what she does. 1 The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.
People who live good lives respect the Lord, but those who live evil lives don't. 2 He whose walk is upright fears the LORD, but he whose ways are devious despises him.
Fools will be punished for their proud words, but the words of the wise will protect them. 3 A fool's talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them.
When there are no oxen, no food is in the barn. But with a strong ox, much grain can be grown. 4 Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest.
A truthful witness does not lie, but a false witness tells nothing but lies. 5 A truthful witness does not deceive, but a false witness pours out lies.
Those who make fun of wisdom look for it and do not find it, but knowledge comes easily to those with understanding. 6 The mocker seeks wisdom and finds none, but knowledge comes easily to the discerning.
Stay away from fools, because they can't teach you anything. 7 Stay away from a foolish man, for you will not find knowledge on his lips.
A wise person will understand what to do, but a foolish person is dishonest. 8 The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.
Fools don't care if they sin, but honest people work at being right. 9 Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright.
No one else can know your sadness, and strangers cannot share your joy. 10 Each heart knows its own bitterness, and no one else can share its joy.
The wicked person's house will be destroyed, but a good person's tent will still be standing. 11 The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish.
Some people think they are doing right, but in the end it leads to death. 12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.
Someone who is laughing may be sad inside, and joy may end in sadness. 13 Even in laughter the heart may ache, and joy may end in grief.
Evil people will be paid back for their evil ways, and good people will be rewarded for their good ones. 14 The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for his.
Fools will believe anything, but the wise think about what they do. 15 A simple man believes anything, but a prudent man gives thought to his steps.
Wise people are careful and stay out of trouble, but fools are careless and quick to act. 16 A wise man fears the LORD and shuns evil, but a fool is hotheaded and reckless.
Someone with a quick temper does foolish things, but someone with understanding remains calm. 17 A quick-tempered man does foolish things, and a crafty man is hated.
Fools are rewarded with nothing but more foolishness, but the wise are rewarded with knowledge. 18 The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
Evil people will bow down to those who are good; the wicked will bow down at the door of those who do right. 19 Evil men will bow down in the presence of the good, and the wicked at the gates of the righteous.
The poor are rejected, even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends. 20 The poor are shunned even by their neighbors, but the rich have many friends.
It is a sin to hate your neighbor, but being kind to the needy brings happiness. 21 He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy.
Those who make evil plans will be ruined, but those who plan to do good will be loved and trusted. 22 Do not those who plot evil go astray? But those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness.
Those who work hard make a profit, but those who only talk will be poor. 23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.
Wise people are rewarded with wealth, but fools only get more foolishness. 24 The wealth of the wise is their crown, but the folly of fools yields folly.
A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is a traitor. 25 A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful.
Those who respect the Lord will have security, and their children will be protected. 26 He who fears the LORD has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.
Respect for the Lord gives life. It is like a fountain that can save people from death. 27 The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death.
A king is honored when he has many people to rule, but a prince is ruined if he has none. 28 A large population is a king's glory, but without subjects a prince is ruined.
Patient people have great understanding, but people with quick tempers show their foolishness. 29 A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.
Peace of mind means a healthy body, but jealousy will rot your bones. 30 A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
Whoever mistreats the poor insults their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. 31 He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.
The wicked are ruined by their own evil, but those who do right are protected even in death. 32 When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge.
Wisdom lives in those with understanding, and even fools recognize it. 33 Wisdom reposes in the heart of the discerning and even among fools she lets herself be known.
Doing what is right makes a nation great, but sin will bring disgrace to any people. 34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
A king is pleased with a wise servant, but he will become angry with one who causes him shame. 35 A king delights in a wise servant, but a shameful servant incurs his wrath.
