Revised Standard Version (RSV) New International Version (NIV)
He who speaks the truth gives honest evidence, but a false witness utters deceit. 17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies.
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Truthful lips endure for ever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.
Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, but those who plan good have joy. 20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace.
No ill befalls the righteous, but the wicked are filled with trouble. 21 No harm befalls the righteous, but the wicked have their fill of trouble.
Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight. 22 The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.
A prudent man conceals his knowledge, but fools proclaim their folly. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly.
The hand of the diligent will rule, while the slothful will be put to forced labor. 24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.
Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad. 25 An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.
A righteous man turns away from evil, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. 26 A righteous man is cautious in friendship, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
A slothful man will not catch his prey, but the diligent man will get precious wealth. 27 The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions.
