New Living Translation (NLT) New International Version (NIV)
For the choir director: A psalm of David, to be accompanied by an eight-stringed instrument. Help, O LORD, for the godly are fast disappearing! The faithful have vanished from the earth! 1 Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from among men.
Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and insincere hearts. 2 Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak with deception.
May the LORD bring their flattery to an end and silence their proud tongues. 3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue
They say, "We will lie to our hearts' content. Our lips are our own -- who can stop us?" 4 that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master?"
The LORD replies, "I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do." 5 "Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning of the needy, I will now arise," says the LORD. "I will protect them from those who malign them."
The LORD's promises are pure, like silver refined in a furnace, purified seven times over. 6 And the words of the LORD are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace of clay, purified seven times.
Therefore, LORD, we know you will protect the oppressed, preserving them forever from this lying generation, 7 O LORD, you will keep us safe and protect us from such people forever.
