1 Thessalonians 5

YLT 1 And concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need of my writing to you, NIV 1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to you, YLT 2 for yourselves have known thoroughly that the day of the Lord as a thief in the night doth so come, NIV 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. YLT 3 for when they may say, Peace and surety, then sudden destruction doth stand by them, as the travail [doth] her who is with child, and they shall not escape; NIV 3 While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. YLT 4 and ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day may catch you as a thief; NIV 4 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. YLT 5 all ye are sons of light, and sons of day; we are not of night, nor of darkness, NIV 5 You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. YLT 6 so, then, we may not sleep as also the others, but watch and be sober, NIV 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. YLT 7 for those sleeping, by night do sleep, and those making themselves drunk, by night are drunken, NIV 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. YLT 8 and we, being of the day -- let us be sober, putting on a breastplate of faith and love, and an helmet -- a hope of salvation, NIV 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. YLT 9 because God did not appoint us to anger, but to the acquiring of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, NIV 9 For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. YLT 10 who did die for us, that whether we wake -- whether we sleep -- together with him we may live; NIV 10 He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. YLT 11 wherefore, comfort ye one another, and build ye up, one the one, as also ye do. NIV 11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. YLT 12 And we ask you, brethren, to know those labouring among you, and leading you in the Lord, and admonishing you, NIV 12 Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. YLT 13 and to esteem them very abundantly in love, because of their work; be at peace among yourselves; NIV 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. YLT 14 and we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, comfort the feeble-minded, support the infirm, be patient unto all; NIV 14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. YLT 15 see no one evil for evil may render to any one, but always that which is good pursue ye, both to one another and to all; NIV 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. YLT 16 always rejoice ye; NIV 16 Be joyful always; YLT 17 continually pray ye; NIV 17 pray continually; YLT 18 in every thing give thanks, for this [is] the will of God in Christ Jesus in regard to you. NIV 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. YLT 19 The Spirit quench not; NIV 19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire; YLT 20 prophesyings despise not; NIV 20 do not treat prophecies with contempt. YLT 21 all things prove; that which is good hold fast; NIV 21 Test everything. Hold on to the good. YLT 22 from all appearance of evil abstain ye; NIV 22 Avoid every kind of evil. YLT 23 and the God of the peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your whole spirit, and soul, and body, be preserved unblameably in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ; NIV 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. YLT 24 stedfast is He who is calling you, who also will do [it]. NIV 24 The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. YLT 25 Brethren, pray for us; NIV 25 Brothers, pray for us. YLT 26 salute all the brethren in an holy kiss; NIV 26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. YLT 27 I charge you [by] the Lord, that the letter be read to all the holy brethren; NIV 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers. YLT 28 the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [is] with you! Amen. NIV 28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
