Amos 3

NCV 1 Listen to this word that the Lord has spoken against you, people of Israel, against the whole family he brought out of Egypt. NIV 1 Hear this word the LORD has spoken against you, O people of Israel--against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt: NCV 2 "I have chosen only you out of all the families of the earth, so I will punish you for all your sins." NIV 2 "You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your sins." NCV 3 Two people will not walk together unless they have agreed to do so. NIV 3 Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so? NCV 4 A lion in the forest does not roar unless it has caught an animal; it does not growl in its den when it has caught nothing. NIV 4 Does a lion roar in the thicket when he has no prey? Does he growl in his den when he has caught nothing? NCV 5 A bird will not fall into a trap where there is no bait; the trap will not spring shut if there is nothing to catch. NIV 5 Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground where no snare has been set? Does a trap spring up from the earth when there is nothing to catch? NCV 6 When a trumpet blows a warning in a city, the people tremble. When trouble comes to a city, the Lord has caused it. NIV 6 When a trumpet sounds in a city, do not the people tremble? When disaster comes to a city, has not the LORD caused it? NCV 7 Before the Lord God does anything, he tells his plans to his servants the prophets. NIV 7 Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets. NCV 8 The lion has roared! Who wouldn't be afraid? The Lord God has spoken. Who will not prophesy? NIV 8 The lion has roared-- who will not fear? The Sovereign LORD has spoken-- who can but prophesy? NCV 9 Announce this to the strong buildings of Ashdod and to the strong buildings of Egypt: "Come to the mountains of Samaria, where you will see great confusion and people hurting others." NIV 9 Proclaim to the fortresses of Ashdod and to the fortresses of Egypt: "Assemble yourselves on the mountains of Samaria; see the great unrest within her and the oppression among her people." NCV 10 "The people don't know how to do what is right," says the Lord. "Their strong buildings are filled with treasures they took by force from others." NIV 10 "They do not know how to do right," declares the LORD, "who hoard plunder and loot in their fortresses." NCV 11 So this is what the Lord God says: "An enemy will take over the land and pull down your strongholds; he will take the treasures out of your strong buildings." NIV 11 Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: "An enemy will overrun the land; he will pull down your strongholds and plunder your fortresses." NCV 12 This is what the Lord says: "A shepherd might save from a lion's mouth only two leg bones or a scrap of an ear of his sheep. people who now sit on their beds and on their couches." NIV 12 This is what the LORD says: "As a shepherd saves from the lion's mouth only two leg bones or a piece of an ear, so will the Israelites be saved, those who sit in Samaria on the edge of their beds and in Damascus on their couches." NCV 13 "Listen and be witnesses against the family of Jacob," says the Lord God, the God All-Powerful. NIV 13 "Hear this and testify against the house of Jacob," declares the Lord, the LORD God Almighty. NCV 14 "When I punish Israel for their sins, I will also destroy the altars at Bethel. The corners of the altar will be cut off, and they will fall to the ground. NIV 14 "On the day I punish Israel for her sins, I will destroy the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground. NCV 15 I will tear down the winter house, together with the summer house. The houses decorated with ivory will be destroyed, and the great houses will come to an end," says the Lord. NIV 15 I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses adorned with ivory will be destroyed and the mansions will be demolished," declares the LORD.
