1 Sara recibe la promesa de un hijo<br />El Señor<br /> se le apareció otra vez a Abraham cerca del robledo que pertenecía a Mamre. Un día, Abraham estaba sentado en la entrada de su carpa a la hora más calurosa del día.

The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
2 Entonces levantó la vista y vio a tres hombres de pie cerca de allí. Cuando los vio, corrió a recibirlos, y se inclinó hasta el suelo en señal de bienvenida.

Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.
3 —Mi señor —dijo él—, si le agrada, deténgase aquí un rato.

He said, “If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.
4 Descansen bajo la sombra de este árbol mientras les traen agua para lavarse los pies.

Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.
5 Ya que han honrado a su siervo con esta visita, permítanme prepararles comida para que recobren fuerzas antes de continuar su viaje.<br />—Está bien —dijeron ellos—. Haz lo que dijiste.

Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way—now that you have come to your servant.” “Very well,” they answered, “do as you say.”
6 Entonces Abraham volvió corriendo a la carpa y le dijo a Sara: «¡Apresúrate! Toma tres medidas abundantes<br /> de la mejor harina que tengas, amásala y hornea pan».

So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah. “Quick,” he said, “get three seahs of the finest flour and knead it and bake some bread.”
7 Luego Abraham corrió hacia el rebaño, escogió un becerro tierno y se lo dio a su siervo, quien lo preparó con rapidez.

Then he ran to the herd and selected a choice, tender calf and gave it to a servant, who hurried to prepare it.
8 Cuando la comida estuvo lista, Abraham tomó yogur<br /> y leche junto con la carne asada, y sirvió la comida a los hombres. Mientras ellos comían, Abraham los atendía bajo la sombra de los árboles.

He then brought some curds and milk and the calf that had been prepared, and set these before them. While they ate, he stood near them under a tree.
9 —¿Dónde está Sara, tu esposa? —preguntaron los visitantes.<br />—Está dentro de la carpa —contestó Abraham.

“Where is your wife Sarah?” they asked him. “There, in the tent,” he said.
10 Entonces uno de ellos dijo:<br />—Yo volveré a verte dentro de un año, ¡y tu esposa, Sara, tendrá un hijo!<br />Sara escuchaba la conversación desde la carpa.

Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.” Now Sarah was listening at the entrance to the tent, which was behind him.
11 Abraham y Sara eran muy ancianos en ese tiempo, y hacía mucho que Sara había pasado la edad de tener hijos.

Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah was past the age of childbearing.
12 Así que se rió en silencio dentro de sí misma, y dijo: «¿Cómo podría una mujer acabada como yo disfrutar semejante placer, sobre todo cuando mi señor —mi esposo— también es muy viejo?».

So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?”
13 Entonces el Señor<br /> le dijo a Abraham:<br />—¿Por qué se rió Sara y dijo: “¿Acaso puede una mujer vieja como yo tener un bebé?”?

Then the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Will I really have a child, now that I am old?’
14 ¿Existe algo demasiado difícil para el Señor<br />? Regresaré dentro de un año, y Sara tendrá un hijo.

Is anything too hard for the LORD? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”
15 Sara tuvo miedo, por eso lo negó:<br />—Yo no me reí.<br />Pero el Señor<br /> dijo:<br />—No es cierto, sí te reíste.

Sarah was afraid, so she lied and said, “I did not laugh.” But he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
16 Abraham intercede por Sodoma<br />Después de haber comido, los hombres se levantaron y miraron hacia Sodoma. Cuando salieron, Abraham caminó un tramo con ellos para despedirlos.

When the men got up to leave, they looked down toward Sodom, and Abraham walked along with them to see them on their way.
17 «¿Ocultaré mis planes a Abraham? —dijo el Señor<br />—.

Then the LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?
18 Pues Abraham sin duda llegará a formar una nación grande y poderosa, y todas las naciones de la tierra serán bendecidas por medio de él.
18
Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him.
19 Yo lo escogí a fin de que él ordene a sus hijos y a sus familias que se mantengan en el camino del Señor<br /> haciendo lo que es correcto y justo. Entonces yo haré por Abraham todo lo que he prometido».

For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”
20 Así que el Señor<br /> le dijo a Abraham:<br />—He oído un gran clamor desde Sodoma y Gomorra, porque su pecado es muy grave.

Then the LORD said, “The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievous
21 Bajaré para ver si sus acciones son tan perversas como he oído. Si no es así, quiero saberlo.

that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.”
22 Los otros hombres se dieron la vuelta y se dirigieron a Sodoma, pero el Señor<br /> se quedó con Abraham.

The men turned away and went toward Sodom, but Abraham remained standing before the LORD.
23 Abraham se le acercó y dijo:<br />—¿Destruirás tanto al justo como al malvado?
23
Then Abraham approached him and said: “Will you sweep away the righteous with the wicked?
24 Supongamos que encuentras cincuenta personas justas en la ciudad, ¿aun así la destruirás y no la perdonarás por causa de los justos?

What if there are fifty righteous people in the city? Will you really sweep it away and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous people in it?
25 Seguro que tú no harías semejante cosa: destruir al justo junto con el malvado. ¡Pues estarías tratando al justo y al malvado exactamente de la misma manera! ¡Sin duda, tú no harías eso! ¿Acaso el Juez de toda la tierra no haría lo que es correcto?

Far be it from you to do such a thing—to kill the righteous with the wicked, treating the righteous and the wicked alike. Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
26 Y el Señor<br /> contestó:<br />—Si encuentro cincuenta personas justas en Sodoma, perdonaré a toda la ciudad por causa de ellos.

The LORD said, “If I find fifty righteous people in the city of Sodom, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
27 Entonces Abraham volvió a hablar:<br />—Ya que he comenzado, permíteme decir algo más a mi Señor, aunque no soy más que polvo y cenizas.

Then Abraham spoke up again: “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, though I am nothing but dust and ashes,
28 Supongamos que hubiera solo cuarenta y cinco justos en vez de cincuenta. ¿Destruirás toda la ciudad aunque falten cinco?<br />El Señor<br /> le dijo:<br />—No la destruiré si encuentro cuarenta y cinco justos allí.

what if the number of the righteous is five less than fifty? Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five people?” “If I find forty-five there,” he said, “I will not destroy it.”
29 Entonces Abraham insistió en su petición:<br />—¿Supongamos que hubiera solamente cuarenta?<br />El Señor<br /> le contestó:<br />—No la destruiré por causa de esos cuarenta.

Once again he spoke to him, “What if only forty are found there?” He said, “For the sake of forty, I will not do it.”
30 —Por favor, no te enojes, mi Señor —rogó Abraham—. Permíteme seguir hablando. ¿Supongamos que se encontraran solamente treinta justos?<br />El Señor<br /> le contestó:<br />—No la destruiré si encuentro treinta.

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak. What if only thirty can be found there?” He answered, “I will not do it if I find thirty there.”
31 Entonces Abraham dijo:<br />—Dado que me he atrevido a hablar al Señor, permíteme continuar. ¿Supongamos que hay solamente veinte?<br />El Señor<br /> le contestó:<br />—Entonces no la destruiré por causa de esos veinte.

Abraham said, “Now that I have been so bold as to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty can be found there?” He said, “For the sake of twenty, I will not destroy it.”
32 Finalmente, Abraham dijo:<br />—Señor, por favor, no te enojes conmigo si hablo una vez más. ¿Y si hubiera tan solo diez?<br />Y el Señor<br /> contestó:<br />—Entonces no la destruiré por causa de esos diez.

Then he said, “May the Lord not be angry, but let me speak just once more. What if only ten can be found there?” He answered, “For the sake of ten, I will not destroy it.”
33 Cuando el Señor<br /> terminó la conversación con Abraham, siguió su camino, y Abraham regresó a su carpa.

When the LORD had finished speaking with Abraham, he left, and Abraham returned home.
