1 La copa de plata de José<br />Cuando los hermanos estuvieron listos para marcharse, José dio las siguientes instrucciones al administrador del palacio: «Llena sus costales con todo el grano que puedan llevar y pon el dinero de cada uno nuevamente en su costal.

Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: “Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.
2 Luego pon mi copa personal de plata en la abertura del costal del menor de los hermanos, junto con el dinero de su grano». Y el administrador hizo tal como José le indicó.

Then put my cup, the silver one, in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain.” And he did as Joseph said.
3 Los hermanos se levantaron al amanecer y emprendieron el viaje con sus burros cargados.

As morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.
4 Cuando habían recorrido solo una corta distancia y apenas habían llegado a las afueras de la ciudad, José le dijo al administrador del palacio: «Sal tras ellos y detenlos; y cuando los alcances, pregúntales: “¿Por qué han pagado mi bondad con semejante malicia?

They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, “Go after those men at once, and when you catch up with them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
5 ¿Por qué han robado la copa de plata<br /> de mi amo, la que usa para predecir el futuro? ¡Qué maldad tan grande han cometido!”».

Isn’t this the cup my master drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.’ ”
6 Cuando el administrador del palacio alcanzó a los hombres, les habló tal como José le había indicado.

When he caught up with them, he repeated these words to them.
7 —¿De qué habla usted? —respondieron los hermanos—. Nosotros somos sus siervos y nunca haríamos semejante cosa.

But they said to him, “Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!
8 ¿Acaso no devolvimos el dinero que encontramos en nuestros costales? Lo trajimos de vuelta desde la tierra de Canaán. ¿Por qué robaríamos oro o plata de la casa de su amo?

We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found inside the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
9 Si usted encuentra la copa en poder de uno de nosotros, que muera el hombre que la tenga. Y el resto de nosotros, mi señor, seremos sus esclavos.

If any of your servants is found to have it, he will die; and the rest of us will become my lord’s slaves.”
10 —Eso es justo —respondió el hombre—, pero solo el hombre que haya robado la copa será mi esclavo. Los demás quedarán libres.

“Very well, then,” he said, “let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame.”
11 Ellos bajaron rápidamente sus costales de los lomos de sus burros y los abrieron.

Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.
12 El administrador del palacio revisó los costales de cada uno de los hermanos, desde el mayor hasta el menor, ¡y encontró la copa en el costal de Benjamín!

Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.
13 Al ver eso, los hermanos se rasgaron la ropa en señal de desesperación. Luego volvieron a cargar sus burros y regresaron a la ciudad.

At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.
14 José todavía estaba en su palacio cuando Judá y sus hermanos llegaron. Entonces se postraron en el suelo delante de él.

Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers came in, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.
15 —¿Qué han hecho ustedes? —reclamó José—. ¿No saben que un hombre como yo puede predecir el futuro?

Joseph said to them, “What is this you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?”
16 —Oh, mi señor —contestó Judá—, ¿qué podemos responderle? ¿Cómo podemos explicar esto? ¿Cómo podemos probar nuestra inocencia? Dios nos está castigando por nuestros pecados. Mi señor, todos hemos regresado para ser sus esclavos, todos nosotros, y no solo nuestro hermano que tenía la copa en su costal.

“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied. “What can we say? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves—we ourselves and the one who was found to have the cup.”
17 —No —dijo José—. ¡Yo jamás haría algo así! Solo el hombre que robó la copa será mi esclavo. Los demás pueden volver en paz a la casa de su padre.

But Joseph said, “Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace.”
18 Judá habla por sus hermanos<br />Entonces Judá dio un paso adelante y dijo:<br />—Por favor, mi señor, permita que su siervo le hable sólo unas palabras. Le ruego que no se enoje conmigo, a pesar de ser usted tan poderoso como el faraón mismo.

Then Judah went up to him and said: “Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
19 »Mi señor, anteriormente nos preguntó a nosotros, sus siervos: “¿Tienen un padre o un hermano?”.

My lord asked his servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
20 Y nosotros respondimos: “Sí, mi señor, tenemos un padre que ya es anciano, y su hijo menor le nació en la vejez. Su hermano de padre y madre murió y él es el único hijo que queda de su madre, y su padre lo ama mucho”.

And we answered, ‘We have an aged father, and there is a young son born to him in his old age. His brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
21 »Usted nos dijo: “Tráiganlo aquí para que lo vea con mis propios ojos”.

“Then you said to your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.’
22 Pero nosotros le dijimos a usted: “Mi señor, el muchacho no puede dejar a su padre, porque su padre moriría”.

And we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.’
23 Pero usted nos dijo: “A menos que su hermano menor venga con ustedes, nunca más volverán a ver mi rostro”.

But you told your servants, ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
24 »Entonces regresamos a la casa de su siervo, nuestro padre, y le dijimos lo que usted nos había dicho.

When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.
25 Tiempo después, cuando él nos dijo que regresáramos a comprar más alimento,

“Then our father said, ‘Go back and buy a little more food.’
26 le respondimos: “No podemos ir a menos que permitas que nuestro hermano menor nos acompañe. Nunca llegaremos a ver el rostro del hombre a menos que nuestro hermano menor esté con nosotros”.

But we said, ‘We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’
27 »Entonces mi padre nos dijo: “Como ya saben, mi esposa tuvo dos hijos,

“Your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.
28 y uno de ellos se fue y nunca más regresó. Sin duda, fue despedazado por algún animal salvaje, y no he vuelto a verlo.

One of them went away from me, and I said, “He has surely been torn to pieces.” And I have not seen him since.
29 Si ahora alejan de mí a su hermano y él sufre algún daño, ustedes mandarán a la tumba<br /> a este hombre entristecido y canoso”.

If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in misery.’
30 »Y ahora, mi señor, no puedo regresar a la casa de mi padre sin el muchacho. La vida de nuestro padre está ligada a la vida del muchacho.

“So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,
31 Si nuestro padre ve que el muchacho no está con nosotros, morirá. Nosotros, sus siervos, ciertamente seremos responsables de haber enviado a la tumba a ese hombre entristecido y canoso.

sees that the boy isn’t there, he will die. Your servants will bring the gray head of our father down to the grave in sorrow.
32 Mi señor, yo le garanticé a mi padre que me haría cargo del muchacho. Le dije que, si no lo llevaba de regreso, yo cargaría con la culpa para siempre.

Your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father. I said, ‘If I do not bring him back to you, I will bear the blame before you, my father, all my life!’
33 »Por favor, mi señor, permita que yo me quede aquí como esclavo en lugar del muchacho, y deje que el muchacho regrese con sus hermanos.

“Now then, please let your servant remain here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy, and let the boy return with his brothers.
34 Pues, ¿cómo podré regresar y ver a mi padre si el muchacho no está conmigo? ¡No podría soportar ver la angustia que le provocaría a mi padre!

How can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? No! Do not let me see the misery that would come on my father.”
