Job 15

MSG 1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke a second time: NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: MSG 2 "If you were truly wise, would you sound so much like a windbag, belching hot air? NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? MSG 3 Would you talk nonsense in the middle of a serious argument, babbling baloney? NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? MSG 4 Look at you! You trivialize religion, turn spiritual conversation into empty gossip. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. MSG 5 It's your sin that taught you to talk this way. You chose an education in fraud. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. MSG 6 Your own words have exposed your guilt. It's nothing I've said - you've incriminated yourself! NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. MSG 7 Do you think you're the first person to have to deal with these things? Have you been around as long as the hills? NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? MSG 8 Were you listening in when God planned all this? Do you think you're the only one who knows anything? NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? MSG 9 What do you know that we don't know? What insights do you have that we've missed? NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? MSG 10 Gray beards and white hair back us up - old folks who've been around a lot longer than you. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. MSG 11 Are God's promises not enough for you, spoken so gently and tenderly? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? MSG 12 Why do you let your emotions take over, lashing out and spitting fire, NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, MSG 13 Pitting your whole being against God by letting words like this come out of your mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? MSG 14 Do you think it's possible for any mere mortal to be sinless in God's sight, for anyone born of a human mother to get it all together? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? MSG 15 Why, God can't even trust his holy angels. He sees the flaws in the very heavens themselves, NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, MSG 16 So how much less we humans, smelly and foul, who lap up evil like water? NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! MSG 17 "I've a thing or two to tell you, so listen up! I'm letting you in on my views; NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, MSG 18 It's what wise men and women have always taught, holding nothing back from what they were taught NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers MSG 19 By their parents, back in the days when they had this land all to themselves: NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): MSG 20 Those who live by their own rules, not God's, can expect nothing but trouble, and the longer they live, the worse it gets. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. MSG 21 Every little sound terrifies them. Just when they think they have it made, disaster strikes. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. MSG 22 They despair of things ever getting better - they're on the list of people for whom things always turn out for the worst. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. MSG 23 They wander here and there, never knowing where the next meal is coming from - every day is doomsday! NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. MSG 24 They live in constant terror, always with their backs up against the wall NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, MSG 25 Because they insist on shaking their fists at God, defying God Almighty to his face, NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, MSG 26 Always and ever at odds with God, always on the defensive. NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. MSG 27 "Even if they're the picture of health, trim and fit and youthful, NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, MSG 28 They'll end up living in a ghost town sleeping in a hovel not fit for a dog, a ramshackle shack. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. MSG 29 They'll never get ahead, never amount to a hill of beans. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. MSG 30 And then death - don't think they'll escape that! They'll end up shriveled weeds, brought down by a puff of God's breath. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. MSG 31 There's a lesson here: Whoever invests in lies, gets lies for interest, NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. MSG 32 Paid in full before the due date. Some investment! NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. MSG 33 They'll be like fruit frost-killed before it ripens, like buds sheared off before they bloom. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. MSG 34 The godless are fruitless - a barren crew; a life built on bribes goes up in smoke. NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. MSG 35 They have sex with sin and give birth to evil. Their lives are wombs for breeding deceit." NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
