NCV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered: NIV 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: NCV 2 "A wise person would not answer with empty words or fill his stomach with the hot east wind. NIV 2 "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? NCV 3 He would not argue with useless words or make speeches that have no value. NIV 3 Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? NCV 4 But you even destroy respect for God and limit the worship of him. NIV 4 But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. NCV 5 Your sin teaches your mouth what to say; you use words to trick others. NIV 5 Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. NCV 6 It is your own mouth, not mine, that shows you are wicked; your own lips testify against you. NIV 6 Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. NCV 7 "You are not the first man ever born; you are not older than the hills. NIV 7 "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? NCV 8 You did not listen in on God's secret council. But you limit wisdom to yourself. NIV 8 Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself ? NCV 9 You don't know any more than we know. You don't understand any more than we understand. NIV 9 What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? NCV 10 Old people with gray hair are on our side; they are even older than your father. NIV 10 The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. NCV 11 Is the comfort God gives you not enough for you, even when words are spoken gently to you? NIV 11 Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? NCV 12 Has your heart carried you away from God? Why do your eyes flash with anger? NIV 12 Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, NCV 13 Why do you speak out your anger against God? Why do these words pour out of your mouth? NIV 13 so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? NCV 14 "How can anyone be pure? How can someone born to a woman be good? NIV 14 "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? NCV 15 God places no trust in his holy ones, and even the heavens are not pure in his eyes. NIV 15 If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, NCV 16 How much less pure is one who is terrible and rotten and drinks up evil as if it were water! NIV 16 how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! NCV 17 "Listen to me, and I will tell you about it; I will tell you what I have seen. NIV 17 "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, NCV 18 These are things wise men have told; their fathers told them, and they have hidden nothing. NIV 18 what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers NCV 19 (The land was given to their fathers only, and no foreigner lived among them.) NIV 19 (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): NCV 20 The wicked suffer pain all their lives; the cruel suffer during all the years saved up for them. NIV 20 All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. NCV 21 Terrible sounds fill their ears, and when things seem to be going well, robbers attack them. NIV 21 Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. NCV 22 Evil people give up trying to escape from the darkness; it has been decided that they will die by the sword. NIV 22 He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. NCV 23 They wander around and will become food for vultures. They know darkness will soon come. NIV 23 He wanders about--food for vultures; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. NCV 24 Worry and suffering terrify them; they overwhelm them, like a king ready to attack, NIV 24 Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, NCV 25 because they shake their fists at God and try to get their own way against the Almighty. NIV 25 because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, NCV 26 They stubbornly charge at God with thick, strong shields. NIV 26 defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. NCV 27 "Although the faces of the wicked are thick with fat, and their bellies are fat with flesh, NIV 27 "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, NCV 28 they will live in towns that are ruined, in houses where no one lives, which are crumbling into ruins. NIV 28 he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. NCV 29 The wicked will no longer get rich, and the riches they have will not last; the things they own will no longer spread over the land. NIV 29 He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. NCV 30 They will not escape the darkness. A flame will dry up their branches; God's breath will carry the wicked away. NIV 30 He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. NCV 31 The wicked should not fool themselves by trusting what is useless. If they do, they will get nothing in return. NIV 31 Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. NCV 32 Their branches will dry up before they finish growing and will never turn green. NIV 32 Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. NCV 33 They will be like a vine whose grapes are pulled off before they are ripe, like an olive tree that loses its blossoms. NIV 33 He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. NCV 34 People without God can produce nothing. Fire will destroy the tents of those who take money to do evil, NIV 34 For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. NCV 35 who plan trouble and give birth to evil, whose hearts plan ways to trick others." NIV 35 They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit."
