Job 16

NLT 1 Then Job spoke again: NIV 1 Then Job replied: NLT 2 "I have heard all this before. What miserable comforters you are! NIV 2 "I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all! NLT 3 Won't you ever stop your flow of foolish words? What have I said that makes you speak so endlessly? NIV 3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing? NLT 4 I could say the same things if you were in my place. I could spout off my criticisms against you and shake my head at you. NIV 4 I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you. NLT 5 But that's not what I would do. I would speak in a way that helps you. I would try to take away your grief. NIV 5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. NLT 6 But as it is, my grief remains no matter how I defend myself. And it does not help if I refuse to speak." NIV 6 "Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away. NLT 7 "O God, you have ground me down and devastated my family. NIV 7 Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household. NLT 8 You have reduced me to skin and bones -- as proof, they say, of my sins. NIV 8 You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me. NLT 9 God hates me and tears angrily at my flesh. He gnashes his teeth at me and pierces me with his eyes. NIV 9 God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes. NLT 10 People jeer and laugh at me. They slap my cheek in contempt. A mob gathers against me. NIV 10 Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. NLT 11 God has handed me over to sinners. He has tossed me into the hands of the wicked." NIV 11 God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. NLT 12 "I was living quietly until he broke me apart. He took me by the neck and dashed me to pieces. Then he set me up as his target. NIV 12 All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; NLT 13 His archers surrounded me, and his arrows pierced me without mercy. The ground is wet with my blood. NIV 13 his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground. NLT 14 Again and again he smashed me, charging at me like a warrior. NIV 14 Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior. NLT 15 Here I sit in sackcloth. I have surrendered, and I sit in the dust. NIV 15 "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust. NLT 16 My eyes are red with weeping; darkness covers my eyes. NIV 16 My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes; NLT 17 Yet I am innocent, and my prayer is pure." NIV 17 yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure. NLT 18 "O earth, do not conceal my blood. Let it cry out on my behalf. NIV 18 "O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest! NLT 19 Even now my witness is in heaven. My advocate is there on high. NIV 19 Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. NLT 20 My friends scorn me, but I pour out my tears to God. NIV 20 My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; NLT 21 Oh, that someone would mediate between God and me, as a person mediates between friends. NIV 21 on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. NLT 22 For soon I must go down that road from which I will never return." NIV 22 "Only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return.
