John 5

GW 1 Later, Jesus went to Jerusalem for a Jewish festival. NIV 1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. GW 2 Near Sheep Gate in Jerusalem was a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew. It had five porches. NIV 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. GW 3 Under these porches a large number of sick people--people who were blind, lame, or paralyzed--used to lie. NIV 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie--the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. GW 4 GW 5 One man, who had been sick for 38 years, was lying there. NIV 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. GW 6 Jesus saw the man lying there and knew that he had been sick for a long time. So Jesus asked the man, "Would you like to get well?" NIV 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, "Do you want to get well?" GW 7 The sick man answered Jesus, "Sir, I don't have anyone to put me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I'm trying to get there, someone else steps into the pool ahead of me." NIV 7 "Sir," the invalid replied, "I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me." GW 8 Jesus told the man, "Get up, pick up your cot, and walk." NIV 8 Then Jesus said to him, "Get up! Pick up your mat and walk." GW 9 The man immediately became well, picked up his cot, and walked. That happened on a day of worship. NIV 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, GW 10 So the Jews told the man who had been healed, "This is a day of worship. You're not allowed to carry your cot today." NIV 10 and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, "It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat." GW 11 The man replied, "The man who made me well told me to pick up my cot and walk." NIV 11 But he replied, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Pick up your mat and walk.' " GW 12 The Jews asked him, "Who is the man who told you to pick it up and walk?" NIV 12 So they asked him, "Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?" GW 13 But the man who had been healed didn't know who Jesus was. (Jesus had withdrawn from the crowd.) NIV 13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. GW 14 Later, Jesus met the man in the temple courtyard and told him, "You're well now. Stop sinning so that something worse doesn't happen to you." NIV 14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, "See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." GW 15 The man went back to the Jews and told them that Jesus was the man who had made him well. NIV 15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well. GW 16 The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of worship. NIV 16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jews persecuted him. GW 17 Jesus replied to them, "My Father is working right now, and so am I." NIV 17 Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I, too, am working." GW 18 His reply made the Jews more intent on killing him. Not only did he break the laws about the day of worship, but also he made himself equal to God when he said repeatedly that God was his Father. NIV 18 For this reason the Jews tried all the harder to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. GW 19 Jesus said to the Jews, "I can guarantee this truth: The Son cannot do anything on his own. He can do only what he sees the Father doing. Indeed, the Son does exactly what the Father does. NIV 19 Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. GW 20 The Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing. The Father will show him even greater things to do than these things so that you will be amazed. NIV 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, to your amazement he will show him even greater things than these. GW 21 In the same way that the Father brings back the dead and gives them life, the Son gives life to anyone he chooses. NIV 21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it. GW 22 "The Father doesn't judge anyone. He has entrusted judgment entirely to the Son NIV 22 Moreover, the Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son, GW 23 so that everyone will honor the Son as they honor the Father. Whoever doesn't honor the Son doesn't honor the Father who sent him. NIV 23 that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him. GW 24 I can guarantee this truth: Those who listen to what I say and believe in the one who sent me will have eternal life. They won't be judged because they have already passed from death to life. NIV 24 "I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. GW 25 "I can guarantee this truth: A time is coming (and is now here) when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who respond to it will live. NIV 25 I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. GW 26 The Father is the source of life, and he has enabled the Son to be the source of life too. NIV 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. GW 27 "He has also given the Son authority to pass judgment because he is the Son of Man. NIV 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. GW 28 Don't be surprised at what I've just said. A time is coming when all the dead will hear his voice, NIV 28 "Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice GW 29 and they will come out of their tombs. Those who have done good will come back to life and live. But those who have done evil will come back to life and will be judged. NIV 29 and come out--those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned. GW 30 I can't do anything on my own. As I listen [to the Father], I make my judgments. My judgments are right because I don't try to do what I want but what the one who sent me wants. NIV 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me. GW 31 "If I testify on my own behalf, what I say isn't true. NIV 31 "If I testify about myself, my testimony is not valid. GW 32 Someone else testifies on my behalf, and I know that what he says about me is true. NIV 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is valid. GW 33 You sent people to John [the Baptizer], and he testified to the truth. NIV 33 "You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. GW 34 But I don't depend on human testimony. I'm telling you this to save you. NIV 34 Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. GW 35 John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light. NIV 35 John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light. GW 36 But I have something that testifies more favorably on my behalf than John's testimony. The tasks that the Father gave me to carry out, these tasks which I perform, testify on my behalf. They prove that the Father has sent me. NIV 36 "I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the very work that the Father has given me to finish, and which I am doing, testifies that the Father has sent me. GW 37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form. NIV 37 And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me. You have never heard his voice nor seen his form, GW 38 So you don't have the Father's message within you, because you don't believe in the person he has sent. NIV 38 nor does his word dwell in you, for you do not believe the one he sent. GW 39 You study the Scriptures in detail because you think you have the source of eternal life in them. These Scriptures testify on my behalf. NIV 39 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, GW 40 Yet, you don't want to come to me to get [eternal] life. NIV 40 yet you refuse to come to me to have life. GW 41 "I don't accept praise from humans. NIV 41 "I do not accept praise from men, GW 42 But I know what kind of people you are. You don't have any love for God. NIV 42 but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. GW 43 I have come with the authority my Father has given me, but you don't accept me. If someone else comes with his own authority, you will accept him. NIV 43 I have come in my Father's name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. GW 44 How can you believe when you accept each other's praise and don't look for the praise that comes from the only God? NIV 44 How can you believe if you accept praise from one another, yet make no effort to obtain the praise that comes from the only God ? GW 45 "Don't think that I will accuse you in the presence of the Father. Moses, the one you trust, is already accusing you. NIV 45 "But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. GW 46 If you really believed Moses, you would believe me. Moses wrote about me. NIV 46 If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. GW 47 If you don't believe what Moses wrote, how will you ever believe what I say?" NIV 47 But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
