John 7:40-53

NAS 40 Some of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet." NIV 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, "Surely this man is the Prophet." NAS 41 Others were saying, "This is the Christ." Still others were saying, "Surely the Christ is not going to come from Galilee, is He? NIV 41 Others said, "He is the Christ." Still others asked, "How can the Christ come from Galilee? NAS 42 "Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?" NIV 42 Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David's family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?" NAS 43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. NIV 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. NAS 44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him. NIV 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. NAS 45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?" NIV 45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?" NAS 46 The officers answered, "Never has a man spoken the way this man speaks." NIV 46 "No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared. NAS 47 The Pharisees then answered them, "You have not also been led astray, have you? NIV 47 "You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. NAS 48 "No one of the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he? NIV 48 "Has any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? NAS 49 "But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed." NIV 49 No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse on them." NAS 50 Nicodemus (he who came to Him before, being one of them) said to them, NIV 50 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, NAS 51 "Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?" NIV 51 "Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?" NAS 52 They answered him, "You are not also from Galilee, are you? Search, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee." NIV 52 They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee." NAS 53 [Everyone went to his home. NIV 53 Then each went to his own home.
