Lamentations 3

BBE 1 I am the man who has seen trouble by the rod of his wrath. NIV 1 I am the man who has seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. BBE 2 By him I have been made to go in the dark where there is no light. NIV 2 He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light; BBE 3 Truly against me his hand has been turned again and again all the day. NIV 3 indeed, he has turned his hand against me again and again, all day long. BBE 4 My flesh and my skin have been used up by him and my bones broken. NIV 4 He has made my skin and my flesh grow old and has broken my bones. BBE 5 He has put up a wall against me, shutting me in with bitter sorrow. NIV 5 He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. BBE 6 He has kept me in dark places, like those who have been long dead. NIV 6 He has made me dwell in darkness like those long dead. BBE 7 He has put a wall round me, so that I am not able to go out; he has made great the weight of my chain. NIV 7 He has walled me in so I cannot escape; he has weighed me down with chains. BBE 8 Even when I send up a cry for help, he keeps my prayer shut out. NIV 8 Even when I call out or cry for help, he shuts out my prayer. BBE 9 He has put up a wall of cut stones about my ways, he has made my roads twisted. NIV 9 He has barred my way with blocks of stone; he has made my paths crooked. BBE 10 He is like a bear waiting for me, like a lion in secret places. NIV 10 Like a bear lying in wait, like a lion in hiding, BBE 11 By him my ways have been turned on one side and I have been pulled in bits; he has made me waste. NIV 11 he dragged me from the path and mangled me and left me without help. BBE 12 With his bow bent, he has made me the mark for his arrows. NIV 12 He drew his bow and made me the target for his arrows. BBE 13 He has let loose his arrows into the inmost parts of my body. NIV 13 He pierced my heart with arrows from his quiver. BBE 14 I have become the sport of all the peoples; I am their song all the day. NIV 14 I became the laughingstock of all my people; they mock me in song all day long. BBE 15 He has made my life nothing but pain, he has given me the bitter root in full measure. NIV 15 He has filled me with bitter herbs and sated me with gall. BBE 16 By him my teeth have been broken with crushed stones, and I am bent low in the dust. NIV 16 He has broken my teeth with gravel; he has trampled me in the dust. BBE 17 My soul is sent far away from peace, I have no more memory of good. NIV 17 I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. BBE 18 And I said, My strength is cut off, and my hope from the Lord. NIV 18 So I say, "My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the LORD." BBE 19 Keep in mind my trouble and my wandering, the bitter root and the poison. NIV 19 I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. BBE 20 My soul still keeps the memory of them; and is bent down in me. NIV 20 I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. BBE 21 This I keep in mind, and because of this I have hope. NIV 21 Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: BBE 22 It is through the Lord's love that we have not come to destruction, because his mercies have no limit. NIV 22 Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. BBE 23 They are new every morning; great is your good faith. NIV 23 They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. BBE 24 I said to myself, The Lord is my heritage; and because of this I will have hope in him. NIV 24 I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." BBE 25 The Lord is good to those who are waiting for him, to the soul which is looking for him. NIV 25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; BBE 26 It is good to go on hoping and quietly waiting for the salvation of the Lord. NIV 26 it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD. BBE 27 It is good for a man to undergo the yoke when he is young. NIV 27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. BBE 28 Let him be seated by himself, saying nothing, because he has put it on him. NIV 28 Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. BBE 29 Let him put his mouth in the dust, if by chance there may be hope. NIV 29 Let him bury his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope. BBE 30 Let his face be turned to him who gives him blows; let him be full of shame. NIV 30 Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. BBE 31 For the Lord does not give a man up for ever. NIV 31 For men are not cast off by the Lord forever. BBE 32 For though he sends grief, still he will have pity in the full measure of his love. NIV 32 Though he brings grief, he will show compassion, so great is his unfailing love. BBE 33 For he has no pleasure in troubling and causing grief to the children of men. NIV 33 For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men. BBE 34 In a man's crushing under his feet all the prisoners of the earth, NIV 34 To crush underfoot all prisoners in the land, BBE 35 In his turning away the right of a man before the face of the Most High. NIV 35 to deny a man his rights before the Most High, BBE 36 In his doing wrong to a man in his cause, the Lord has no pleasure. NIV 36 to deprive a man of justice-- would not the Lord see such things? BBE 37 Who is able to say a thing, and give effect to it, if it has not been ordered by the Lord? NIV 37 Who can speak and have it happen if the Lord has not decreed it? BBE 38 Do not evil and good come from the mouth of the Most High? NIV 38 Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that both calamities and good things come? BBE 39 What protest may a living man make, even a man about the punishment of his sin? NIV 39 Why should any living man complain when punished for his sins? BBE 40 Let us make search and put our ways to the test, turning again to the Lord; NIV 40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. BBE 41 Lifting up our hearts with our hands to God in the heavens. NIV 41 Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven, and say: BBE 42 We have done wrong and gone against your law; we have not had your forgiveness. NIV 42 "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven. BBE 43 Covering yourself with wrath you have gone after us, cutting us off without pity; NIV 43 "You have covered yourself with anger and pursued us; you have slain without pity. BBE 44 Covering yourself with a cloud, so that prayer may not get through. NIV 44 You have covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer can get through. BBE 45 You have made us like waste and that for which there is no use, among the peoples. NIV 45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations. BBE 46 The mouths of all our haters are open wide against us. NIV 46 "All our enemies have opened their mouths wide against us. BBE 47 Fear and deep waters have come on us, wasting and destruction. NIV 47 We have suffered terror and pitfalls, ruin and destruction." BBE 48 Rivers of water are running down from my eyes, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. NIV 48 Streams of tears flow from my eyes because my people are destroyed. BBE 49 My eyes are streaming without stopping, they have no rest, NIV 49 My eyes will flow unceasingly, without relief, BBE 50 Till the Lord's eye is turned on me, till he sees my trouble from heaven. NIV 50 until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees. BBE 51 The Lord is unkind to my soul, more than all the daughters of my town. NIV 51 What I see brings grief to my soul because of all the women of my city. BBE 52 They who are against me without cause have gone hard after me as if I was a bird; NIV 52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me like a bird. BBE 53 They have put an end to my life in the prison, stoning me with stones. NIV 53 They tried to end my life in a pit and threw stones at me; BBE 54 Waters were flowing over my head; I said, I am cut off. NIV 54 the waters closed over my head, and I thought I was about to be cut off. BBE 55 I was making prayer to your name, O Lord, out of the lowest prison. NIV 55 I called on your name, O LORD, from the depths of the pit. BBE 56 My voice came to you; let not your ear be shut to my breathing, to my cry. NIV 56 You heard my plea: "Do not close your ears to my cry for relief." BBE 57 You came near in the day when I made my prayer to you: you said, Have no fear. NIV 57 You came near when I called you, and you said, "Do not fear." BBE 58 O Lord, you have taken up the cause of my soul, you have made my life safe. NIV 58 O Lord, you took up my case; you redeemed my life. BBE 59 O Lord, you have seen my wrong; be judge in my cause. NIV 59 You have seen, O LORD, the wrong done to me. Uphold my cause! BBE 60 You have seen all the evil rewards they have sent on me, and all their designs against me. NIV 60 You have seen the depth of their vengeance, all their plots against me. BBE 61 Their bitter words have come to your ears, O Lord, and all their designs against me; NIV 61 O LORD, you have heard their insults, all their plots against me-- BBE 62 The lips of those who came up against me, and their thoughts against me all the day. NIV 62 what my enemies whisper and mutter against me all day long. BBE 63 Take note of them when they are seated, and when they get up; I am their song. NIV 63 Look at them! Sitting or standing, they mock me in their songs. BBE 64 You will give them their reward, O Lord, answering to the work of their hands. NIV 64 Pay them back what they deserve, O LORD, for what their hands have done. BBE 65 You will let their hearts be covered over with your curse on them. NIV 65 Put a veil over their hearts, and may your curse be on them! BBE 66 You will go after them in wrath, and put an end to them from under the heavens of the Lord. NIV 66 Pursue them in anger and destroy them from under the heavens of the LORD.
