Lamentations 5

LEB 1 Remember, O Yahweh, what has become of us; take note, and see our disgrace! NIV 1 Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us; look, and see our disgrace. LEB 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses, to foreigners. NIV 2 Our inheritance has been turned over to aliens, our homes to foreigners. LEB 3 We have become orphans, fatherless, our mothers are like widows. NIV 3 We have become orphans and fatherless, our mothers like widows. LEB 4 {We pay for water with money}, our wood comes [to us] at a price. NIV 4 We must buy the water we drink; our wood can be had only at a price. LEB 5 We are driven on our necks; we are weary, there is no rest for us. NIV 5 Those who pursue us are at our heels; we are weary and find no rest. LEB 6 We have made a deal with Egypt [and] Assyria to be satisfied [with] food. NIV 6 We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread. LEB 7 Our fathers have sinned, they are no more; we bear their iniquity. NIV 7 Our fathers sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment. LEB 8 Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hand. NIV 8 Slaves rule over us, and there is none to free us from their hands. LEB 9 {We risk our life for food} because of the sword of the desert. NIV 9 We get our bread at the risk of our lives because of the sword in the desert. LEB 10 Our skin is hot like an oven because of the scorching famine. NIV 10 Our skin is hot as an oven, feverish from hunger. LEB 11 They raped women in Zion, young women in the cities of Judah. NIV 11 Women have been ravished in Zion, and virgins in the towns of Judah. LEB 12 They hang princes by their hand; they do not show respect before elders. NIV 12 Princes have been hung up by their hands; elders are shown no respect. LEB 13 Young men must carry a hand-mill and boys stumble under the wood. NIV 13 Young men toil at the millstones; boys stagger under loads of wood. LEB 14 Elders are no longer at the gate, young men no longer play stringed instruments. NIV 14 The elders are gone from the city gate; the young men have stopped their music. LEB 15 The joy of our hearts has stopped; our circle-dancing has changed to a mourning ceremony. NIV 15 Joy is gone from our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. LEB 16 The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! NIV 16 The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us, for we have sinned! LEB 17 Because of this, our heart has become faint, because of these, our eyes have become dim. NIV 17 Because of this our hearts are faint, because of these things our eyes grow dim LEB 18 Because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate, {foxes tread on it}. NIV 18 for Mount Zion, which lies desolate, with jackals prowling over it. LEB 19 You, O Yahweh, will sit forever [on] your throne for generation to generation. NIV 19 You, O LORD, reign forever; your throne endures from generation to generation. LEB 20 Why have you forgotten us forever? Why have you forsaken us {for so long}? NIV 20 Why do you always forget us? Why do you forsake us so long? LEB 21 Restore us to you, O Yahweh, that we will be restored; renew our days as of old. NIV 21 Restore us to yourself, O LORD, that we may return; renew our days as of old LEB 22 Unless you have utterly rejected us, unless you are angry with us beyond measure. NIV 22 unless you have utterly rejected us and are angry with us beyond measure.
